UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DOSS PATE, OF ABBOTT, TEXAS.
HORSE-COLLAR.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Application filed July 8, 1913. Serial No. 777,898.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. PArE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ab-
bott, in the county of Hill -and State of
5 Texas, have invented new and useful Im-
provements in Horse-Collars, of which the
following is a specification.
This invention relates to horse collars and
more particularly to combined collars and
10 hames.
The principal object of the invention is to
provide simple and efficient means for at-
taching a pneumatic pad to the hames so
that it may be readily removed.
15 Further objects .of the invention will ap-
pear as the following description is read in
connection with the accompanying drawing,
which forms a part of this application, and
in which:
20 Figure 1 is an elevation of the combined
collar and hames showing the pneumatic
pad applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse
sectional view taken through one section of
the pad. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the pad
25 casing removed from the hames.
Referring more particularly to the draw-
ing, 1 and 2 represent the separate hame
sections each of which is provided with a
vertically extending apertured projection
30 adapted to receive the connecting strap or
chain and also with a ring or loop at its
lower end to receive the connecting strap
for joining the lower end of the sections.
Each section of the hame comprises a metal-.
35 lic plate curved to conform to the animal's
shoulder and provided with a curved flange
3 which extends around the entire marginal
edge of the plate. Each section is also pro-
vided with suitable tug hooks, ring turrets
40 and like devices which form no part of this
invention.
The pad consists of a casing formed in two
sections 4 and 5 which are connected to-
gether at their upper ends by a strap or;
45 other flexible connecting element 6 which
may carry a neck pad if desired. The sec-tions 4 and 5 are made to conform to the
outline of the hame sections 1 and 2 and are
constructed similarly to the shoes of ordi-
nary pneumatic tires, that is, their marginal 50
edges are separated and provided with flange
engaging ribs 7 which are suitably rein-
forced by curved metallic plates 8 or other
similar or suitable devices, for a purpose to
be hereinafter described. The marginal 55
edges of these sections are hooked over the
flanges 3, as will be seen from an inspection
of Fig. 2, and the flexible bag is mounted
between the hames and the casing, as shown
at 9. These bags are inflated through sepa- 60
rate valves 10 so that each pad may have the
desired hardness or flexibility according to
the various conditions which must be ob-
served, among which is the condition of the
animal's shoulders. By reinforcing the ribs 65
7 on the sections the casings are prevented
from bending at the juncture of the rib
with the body of the casing and the rib is
thereby firmly held in engagement with the
curved flange. 70
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising
a pair of plates adapted to be movably
connected together and curved to conform
to the shoulders and neck of the animal, op- 75
positely curved- flanges formed at the mar-
ginal edges of the plate and extending out-
wardly, a pair of pneumatic casings con-
nected together at one end and having rim
engaging ribs at.their marginal edges adapt- 80
ed to extend over the plate and removably
engage the curved flanges of the plates,
curved reinforcing plates embedded in said
ribs, and independent pneumatic tubes ar-
ranged in each casing between the same and 85
the inside of the associated plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
