UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST KRAUSE, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
THRESHOLD.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed march 1, 1915. Serial No. 11,348.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST KRAUSE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at El
Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Thresholds; and I do here-
by declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such
as will enable others skilled in the art to
10 which it appertains to make and use the
same.
The present invention relates to improve-
ments in thresholds, and has for an object
to provide a threshold which will be adjust-
1 able to insure a tight fit with the bottom of
the door and prevent the entrance of dust,
wind, and rain.
Another object of the present invention
resides in providing a threshold which will
20 be of simplified construction and of eco-
nomical manufacture; and which will be
capable of ready adjustment to fit the door
bottom.
With these and other objects in view the
25 invention consists in the novel details of
construction and combinations of parts more
fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly
pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a
8o part of this application, and in which simi-
lar reference symbols indicate corresponding
parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a
perspective view of a threshold constructed
in accordance with the present invention.
35 Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig.
3 is a transverse sectional view of the thresh-
old; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view
of one member of the same.
Referring more particularly to the draw-
40 ings, 1 and 2 indicate a pair of members
inclined or curved, as shown, so as not to
present an abrupt obstacle to the foot, and
formed with bases 3 and 4, respectively, for
supporting the same in the door frame. The
45 members 1 and 2 are preferably constructed
of sheet metal of a sufficient thickness to
withstand the weights imposed on the same
incident to the passage of persons.
The members 1 and 2 are, along their lon-
50 gitudinal adjacent edges, formed with com-
plemental and intermeshing tongues 5 and 6
bent over, as advantageously illustrated in
Fig. 3, and rolled to provide alining eyes,
when the members are assembled, for the
55 passage of a pintle or rod 7, about which the
same may independently revolve. The member 2 is provided, preferably ad-
jacent the base 4, with a plurality of spaced
indentations 8, perforated each for the pas-
sage of a threaded bolt 9, which latter is ar- 60
ranged to engage a nut 10 carried on the
outer free ends of straps or bars 11, secured
in any suitable manner to the opposite mem-
ber 1, as indicated at 12 in Fig. 3. The
heads of the bolts 9 are arranged to lie in the 65
indentations 8 of the member 2, and are
preferably slotted for the engagement of a
screw driver or other tool, whereby the same
may be conveniently turned to effect the
required adjustment. 70
The bases 3 and 4 of each of the members
1 and 2, are provided; at suitable intervals,
with transverse slots 13, and the material
of said bases adjacent the slots is formed
with a series of sockets 14, as seen to ad- 7r
vantage in Fig. 4, to receive the heads of
screws 15. The screws 15 are threaded into
the flooring or base of the door frame, and
are adapted to secure the members of the
improved threshold in their proper relative 80
positions.
In operation, the screws 15 are loosened
sufficiently to raise the heads thereof clear of
the sockets 14, whereupon the threaded bolts
9 may be -turned in either direction to draw 85
the members 1 and 2 together and raise the
threshold, or to force the members 1 and 2
thereof apart so as to lower the same. It
will be understood that the members 1 and 2
hinge about the-pintle 7 in effecting the ad- 9o
justment, and the arrangement of intermesh-
ing tongues 5 and 6 provides a tight joint
between the two members for preventing the
entrance therebetween of foreign matter
likely to clog the threshold and prevent the 95
adjustment of the same. After the thresh-
old has been raised or lowered, as required,
the screws 15 are again turned to engage the
heads thereof with the corresponding sockets
14, in which position they will maintain the ioo
members securely in their adjusted position.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art
may vary the details of construction and
arrangements of parts without departing
from the spirit of my invention, and there- 105
fore I do not wish to be limited to such
features except as may be required by the
claims.
I claim:
1. A threshold divided. along its central nio
longitudinal line, the divided parts hinged
to each other along such line so that the1,139,195.
