UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
OTTO NIEMANN, OF SAN MJARCOS, TEXAS.
DOOR.1,097,558,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application filed November 13, 1912. Serial No. 731,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTro NIEMANN, a citi-
zen of the United States, residing at San
Marcos, in the county of Hays and State of
5 Texas, have invented new and useful Im-
provements in Doors, of which the following
is a specification.
The invention relates to doors and has for
an object to provide a door that can be se-
10 cured in either open or closed position either
from the exterior or interior of the building
on which the door is mounted.
The invention relates more particularly to
doors for use on automobile garages and the
15 like, and in which it is desired to operate
the door either to open or close the same
from either the interior or exterior of the
building by means of suitable cords con-
veniently arranged so that the operator need
20 not remove himself from the vehicle or au-
tomobile in order to swing the doors into
the desired position.
In the further disclosure of the invention
reference is to be had to the accompanying
25 drawings, constituting a part of this specifi-
cation, in which similar characters of ref-
erence denote corresponding parts in all the
views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view looking at
30 the front of a building, showing the door
sections in open and locked position; Fig. 2
is a plan view, parts being broken away to
disclose the underlying structure; Fig. 3 is
a vertical sectional view taken on the line
35 3-3 in Fig. 2, the door sections being shown
in closed and locked position; and Fig. 4 is a
rear elevation of the door, the door sections
being shown in closed position.
Referring more particularly to the views,
40 1 disclose a building 10 having a front side
11 forming a door casing 12, a plurality of
door sections 13 and 14 being mounted to
swing on the casing 12 to close an entrance
15 to the building 10. Located a distance
45 from the door casing 12 on the outer sides
thereof is a pedestal 16 which has secured
to and supported thereupon the upright 18,
this upright is connected to one side of the
door casing 12 by the horizontal cross piece
50 17. The door sections 13 and 14 are adapted
to swing simultaneously by means of a rod
19 having rigid connection with the door
section 13 and having pivotal connection at
its free end with a second rod 20, the said
55 second rod having pivotal connection with
the door section 14. It will now be seen thatwhen one door section, as, for instance, the
door section 13, is swung into either open or
closed position, the other door section 14 will
swing simultaneously with the door section 60
13 and will at all times assume a position
similar to the door section 13, being simul-
taneously operable therewith, as mentioned
heretofore.
A locking bar 21 is arranged in a cham- 65
ber 22 in the door section 13 and is slidable
therein, with an end of the locking bar nor-
mally arranged to project beyond an edge
of the door section 13 by an expansible
spring 23 placed within the chamber 22 and 70
abutting against the rear end of the locking
bar as shown, the outward movement of the
locking bar being limited by a pin 24 pass-
ing entirely through the locking bar 21,
with the ends thereof projecting and oper- 75
able in slots 25, it being readily understood
that when the pin 24 reaches the forward
ends of the slots 25 the locking bar 21 will
be in its outermost position.
A spring actuated dog 26 is mounted to so
swing on the door casing 12 at substantially
the medial portion thereof and is provided
with an inclined edge 27 over which the
locking bar 21 is adapted to ride when the
door sections 13 and 14 are swung into 85
closed position, the dog 26 being then swung
against the action of the spring 26a engag-
ing the same, after which the dog 26, actu-
ated by the spring engaging the same, will
secure the locking bar 21 in a notch 28 in 90
the dog, thus retaining the door sections 13
and 14 in closed and locked position. A
second dog 29, similar to the dog 26, is
mounted on the cross piece 17 and is pref-
erably weighted to secure the door section 95
13 when the locking bar 21 engages the dog,
as mentioned heretofore, and is also adapt-
ed to engage and secure the locking bar 21
in order to retain the door sections 13 and
14 in open and locked position, as shown in 100
Fig. 1.
A lever 30 is mounted to swing at its
medial portion on the door section 13 and
is preferably arranged to swing in a notch
in the door section so as not to interfere 105
with the proper closing or opening of the
door section and a cord 31 is connected to
the pin 24 secured to the locking bar 21, and
to one end of the lever 30, a second cord 32
being connected to the same end of the lever 110
30 and having connection with the lower
end of a lever 33, similar to the lever 30
