extent that the horse's respiration will not
be interfered with.
In order to clamp the set screws 15 after
being screwed into the ends of the tubes 14,
5 I have provided the said set screws with
longitudinally extending slots 24 and in
these slots are mounted leaf springs 25.
These springs may be depressed below the
surface of the threaded portions of the set
10 screws, while the set screws are being ad-
justed, but after the same have been adjust-
ed, the springs are then released and bear
against the threads of the tubular members
14, thus frictionally preventing the said set
15 screws from rotating.
I have provided further means whereby
my device may be used merely for guiding
a horse, and this means acts to lock the lever
members in inoperative position. On the
20 set screws 15 are formed internal threads 26
and on the rear end of each rod is mounted
a member 27 which is internally threaded
and adapted to be adjusted upon the rod on
the threads 28. This member 27 has an ex-
25 ternally threaded shank 29 which is ar-
ranged to be screwed into engagement with
the internal threads 26 on the set screws.
When this is done the lever members will be
locked in operative position and the device
30 may be used merely for guiding the horse.
To again allow the lever members to be op-
erated by a pull upon the driving reins it is
only necessary to disengage the members 27
from the internal threads of the set screws
35 for then the presser members will be allowed
to operate through the actuating rods.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five centsIt may be thus seen that I have provided.
a device which may be used for controlling
a horse which is absolutely uncontrollable
by the ordinary driving bit, and I have fur- 40
ther provided a device which may be used as
a bitless bridle without employing the said
controlling means.
I do not wish to be limited to the particu-
]ar embodiment shown any further than is 45
necessary by the claims.
What is claimed is
1. A device of the class described com-
prising, a frame, levers pivoted to said
frame, presser members on one end. of each 50
of said levers, links connected to the other
ends of said levers, operating rods connect-
ed to said links, spring means for holding
said levers in inoperative position, tubular
casings mounted on said frame and inclosing 55
said rods and said spring means, and means
operatively connected to said casings for va-
rying the tension of said spring means.
2. In a bridle, a frame constructed and ar-
ranged to bridge the nostrils of a. horse, 60
levers pivoted thereto and arranged to en-
gage the nostrils of the horse, means for op-
erating said levers, spring means for re-
turning said levers to inoperative positions,
and means to vary the tension of said spring 65
means.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa-
ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
