UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
JOHN B. BONNEA.U, JR,, 01' 1I SA1', LIAAT.
CULTIVATOR.Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Nov. 18,1913.
Application filed August 12, 1912. Serial No. 714,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BoNNEAU,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing
at Millsap, in the county of Parker and
5 State of Texas, have invented certain new
and useful Improvements in Cultivators,
of which the following is a specification, ref-
erence being had to the accompanying draw-
ings.
This invention comprehends certain new
and useful improvements in cultivator foot-
pieces and relates more particularly to im-
proved means for securing the shovels to
the same without the use of bolts.
15 The object of the invention is to pro-
vide a foot-piece having spring catches
adapted to engage in longitudinal grooves
formed in the flange of the shovel.
Another object of the invention is to pro-
20 vide an improved cross head or shank holder
equipped with novel locking means for hold-
ing the shovel shanks therein.
The invention also aims to generally im-
prove cultivator cross heads, the method of
25 securing the shanks- to the same and the
method of securing the shovels to the shanks.
With these and other objects in view as
shall become apparent as the description
proceeds, the invention consists in certain
30 constructions and arrangement of parts as
I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim
For a complete understanding of my in-
vention reference is to be had to the follow-
ing description and accompanying drawing,
35 in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my im-
proved cross head and foot piece. Fig. 2
is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a
vertical section on the plane of line 3-3
40 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view
on the plane of line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals,
1 designates a gang beam which is connected
to a cultivator by any suitable means coop-
45 erating with the jaw 2. A U-frame having
the rigid arm 3 and the movable arm 4 is
formed on the rear end of the gang beam 1.
The movable arm 4 is pivotally secured to
the beam 1 by the pin 5 which passes through
50 the side plates 6 formed integrally with said
arm. These plates 6 engage the sides of the
beam and prevent lateral movement of the
arm. To lock the frame in its closed posi-tion I provide the bolt 7 which extends ver-
tically through the arms 3 and 4 and has a 55
nut threaded on its lower end.
A cross head or shank holder 8 is pivot-
ally held intermediate of its ends between
the U-frame by the tapering lugs 9 which
fit into sockets in the arms 3 and 4. The 60
cross head is provided on one side of its
vertical center with a plurality of horizontal
slots 10 and on the other side with a plu-
rality of vertical slots 11 all of which extend
entirely through said beam. 65
The plow shank 12 adapted for use in the
vertical slots 11 is straight and is provided
on its inner edge near the upper end thereof
with a plurality of notches 12' the purpose
of which will be explained later. 70
A foot-piece 13 is bolted or secured in any
desired manner to the lower end of the shank
12 and retains the shovel 14 in position.
The shank 28 which is used on the side
of the cross head having the longitudinal 75
slots 10 is curved as shown and is provided
on its lower end with a foot-piece and shovel
similar to the ones described.
To lock the shanks in the cross head I
provide the spring latches 29 and 30 which 80
are formed of flat spring metal and pivot-
ally secured at their inner ends to cross
head. Each securing member 31 passes
through a sleeve 32 formed on the inner end
of each latch. Hooks are formed on the 85
outer ends of the latches 29 and 30 by bend-
ing the said ends at an angle to the same
as at 33, then inwardly as at 34 and then
coiling them to form the loops 35. These
hooks engage over the beveled flanges 36. 90
A slot 37 extends longitudinally of the top
of the cross head 8 over the horizontal slots
10 and allows a flange 38 on the latch 29
to engage the walls of the notches 12a in
the curved shank 28 to hold the shank in 95
position. A slot 39 similar to the slot 37
is formed on the rear face of the cross head
and allows the flange 40 on the latch 30 to
engage with the notches 12' in the shank
12. The plurality of slots 10 and 11 make 100
it possible to vary the distance between the
shanks.
From the foregoing description in con-
nection with the accompanying drawing it
will be seen that I provided a cross beam 105
of simple construction in which plow shanks1,078,898.
