VOLLIE B. MARRS, OF SANTA ANNA, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO D. J.
HARRIS,;OF SANTA ANNA, TEXAS, AND ONE-EIGHTH TO WILLIAM HENRY BLAKEY,
OF BUCKHOLTZ, TEXAS.
STEAN-BOILER INDICATOR.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 28,1914.
Application filed July 18, 1913. Serial No. 779,882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VOLLIE B. MARRS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Santa Anna, in the county of Coleman and
5 State of Texas, have invented new and use-
ful Improvemen~ts in Steam-Boiler Indi-
cators, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
This invention relates to improvements in
10 steam boiler indicators and hs particular
application to a combination steam pressure
and water level indicator.
In carrying out the present invention, it
is my purpose to provide a device of the
15 class described whereby when the water level
within the boiler has dropped below a pre-
determined point, a signal will be given so
as to advise the engineman of the condition
of the water and by means. of which an
20 alarm will be sounded in the event of the
steam pressure exceeding a predetermined
point or dropping below such point.
It is also my purpose to provide a device
of the class described whereby the signals
25 for indicating the increase and decrease in
the steam pressure and the fall of the water
level will have relatively different tones so
that the engineman will be advised as to
the proper course to.pursue' without resort-
30 ing to the usual tests.
Furthermore, I aim to provide a steam
boiler indicator whereby a signal will be
given when the water within the boiler falls
below a predetermined level and by means
35 of which a second signal will sound when
such level has been restored to normal so
that the engineman will be notified when
to cut out the pump or injector.
A further object of the invention is the
40 provision of a steam boiler indicator which
will embrace the desired features of sim-
plicity, efficiency and durability, one which
will operate at all times for its various pur-
poses and one which may be readily applied
45 to any type of steam boiler without resort-
ing to changes or alterations in the boiler
structure.
With-the above and other objectsin view,
the invention consists in the construction,
50 combination and arrangement of parts
hereinafter set forth in and falling within
the scope of the claims. In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 55
is a view in elevation of a. steam boiler indi-
cator constructed in accordance with my
present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cen-
tral sectional view through the same. Fig.
3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view 60
through the upper portion of the indicator
showing the water level signals. Fig. 4 is
an enlarged plan view of one of the con-
trolling valves of the indicator. Fig. 5 is
a similar view of an actuating device for 65
the controlling valve. Fig. 6 is a frag-
mentary sectional view on the line 6-6
of Fig. 2 looking' in the direction of the
arrow. Fig. 7 is a similar view on the line
7-7 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of 70
the arrow.
Referring now to the accompanying draw-
ings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a
casing or housing composed of any suitable
material and preferably, although not nec- 75
essarily, of cylindrical outline in cross sec-
tion and having its upper and lower ends
closed through the medium of caps 2 and
3 preferably cup shaped and having the in-
ner surfaces of the side walls thereof thread- so,.
edly engaging the adjacent ends of the cas-
ing. This casing 1 is divided into a number
of compartments, three being shown in the
present instance at 4, 5 and 6, partitions 7
within the body 1 and suitably spaced apart 85
separating the chambers.
In the present instance, the chambers 4
and 5 are adapted to have communication
with each other under certain conditions and
for this purpose the respective partition 7 90
is provided with a nipple 8 depending a
short distance into Athe chamber 5 and car-
rying at its lower end a valve casing in
which is rotatably mounted a valve and con-
nected to the stem of such valve is a handle 95
10 to the free end of which is fastened
through the medium of a pin and slot con-
nection 11 a depending link 12 having the
lower end thereof fastened to a float 13 dis-
posed within the chamber 5 and equipped 100
on its uflder surface with a weight 14.
Leading into the chamber 5 adjacent to the
top and bottom ends thereof are nipples 15,
16, the former being adapted to have coin-
munication with the steam space of a boiler lob
while the latter is designed to communicate1,095,012.
