Day by Day by Betty Bazar
I have a dog named Teddy Bear who
is about 14 years old and who has com-
pletely lost her sight. It’s a very sad
sight to see her try to make her way
around the yard. She retains her sense
o f hearing and smell and has a wonder-
ful appetite; she just can’t see. She does
pretty well unless she gets excited or
disoriented by the actions of the other
two dogs.
I’ve read several articles that said a blind dog can still live a
happy and good life, if you just provide for them. You leave
everything in familiar places and try to appeal to their other
senses. My greatest fear for her, however, has been whether
or not she could find shelter when it finally did start raining
and got cold. She has a nice, thick fur which repels water
because of her labrador mix, but she is not waterproof.
My worst fears came about the other day when it came a
downpour. I looked out and there was Teddy in the drench-
ing rain, lying over in a comer of the yard. She looked soaked.
She had made her way to one of the three dog houses previ-
ously when it rained, but this time she wasn’t even moving.
It was as if she didn’t know what to do except to huddle up. I
was dressed to go to Sunday night church, and we were due to
leave in about twenty minutes but I couldn’t leave her there.
I ran to the bedroom, mmmaged through a drawer and found
my old slicker; I pulled it on as I ran through the house and
out the back door. It was pouring sheets, and Teddy still had
not moved. I sludged through the yard, got Teddy Bear up,
and nudged her toward the dog houses. The other two dogs,
of course, thought this was a wonderful game and wanted to
play, so they bounded around us on all sides. Their move-
ment and rampant barking confused Teddy, and she turned to
the side on me and headed off in another direction.
“No, no, Teddy,” I urged, grasping at her collar. “We have to
go this way.”
With Teddy finally headed in the right direction and the
other two dogs dancing merrily around us, I pushed and pulled
and cajoled as I tried to keep her moving toward the dog
houses. She could get in any one of them; the other dogs
didn’t care. I tried the smaller house, but she panicked and
balked at the small entrance. I finally drug her over to the big
house with the wide opening and shoved her into it by the
rump.
Once she got into the house and realized that it was warm
and dry, she immediately curled up in a comer. Breathless
from my running and shoving and with rain dripping off the
hood of my slicker, I watched for a minute to see if she would
stay. She did, so I slopped through the water to the gate and
finally into the house.
The bottom of my slacks were wet, my shoes were wet, my
hair was plastered to my head, and it was time to go to church.
I grabbed my stuff, and Joe and I went out to get into the car
to go to church. I checked the dog house; Teddy was still
there.
“I hope she stays there,” I told Joe as I crawled into the car.
“You’ve done all you can for her, Betty,” Joe said. “She’ll
probably stay.”
She stayed there all night long. The next day I bought a big
plastic tub. I wanted a dog house but couldn’t find one. I laid
it on its side near her favorite spot and filled it with pinestraw
for a bed. I put a piece of plyboard on top of it to add extra
coverage from the rain. It has a nice, wide opening; I’m hop-
ing it will provide another option for Teddy. I also drug out
one of the other dog houses so that it be easier for her to find.
And now, I’m waiting for the next rain; my slicker is hanging
near the back door.
