At Pharr United Methodist Church
Miss Dorene Du Paul given in wedbck to David Byrd
Miss Dorene F. Du Paul
became the bride of David K.
Byrd in a double-ring cere-
mony Saturday May 17th at
5:00 p.m. in the Pharr United
Methodist Church. The Rev.
Thom C. Elliot was officiating
minister.
Parents of the couple are
Mrs. Charles Du Paul of Pharr
and Mr. and Mrs. David H.
Byrd of Alamo.
An arch of candelabra
entwined with greenery and
white flowers were placed at
the altar. On each side of the
altar were bouquets of spring
flowers adorned with candles.
Marking the family pews were
bows of yellow and blue
ribbons with matching stream-
ers.
Given in marriage by her
brother, Dennis dorris, the
bride chose a designer gown of
ivory nylon taffeta. The high
neckline was edged in lace, the
bodice of tucked chiffon. The
fitted sleeves were cuffed with
ruffling at the wrist. The long

traditioal train and waist
length veil were both edged in
ivory lace. The bride carried a
bouquet of multicolored spring
flowers laced with baby’s
breath and held with stream-
ing ribbons.
For something "New” the
bride wore gold earrings,
something “Old" the bride
wore a gold picture locket
given to her by her mother,
somethin "Borrowed" was a
sixpence, and something “Blue
was the traditional blue garter.
Miss Diane Cisneros of San
Juan was organist with Miss
Kay Davis of Pharr as soloist.
Miss Charlene Du Paul of
maid of honor. Mrs. Douglas
Byrd, sister-in-law of the
groom, served as bridesmaid.
They wore identical gowns of
organza, one in pale yellow,
the other pale blue, with
matching flowers worn in their
bair. ‘Their bouquets were
replicas of the bride’s bouquet.
Attending the groom were
his brothers, Douglas Byrd of
San Antonio and Donald Byrd
of Harlingen.
For her daughter’s wedding,
the mother of the bride wore a
street length dress of flowered
polyester with a pink corsage.
The groom’s mother chose a
green polyester dress worn
with a whilte carnation
corsage.
Miss Patricia Crowley, neice
of the groom, served as
candlelighter. David Crowley,
nephew of the groom, and
Kenneth Dorris, brother of the
bride, were ushers.
Out of town guests attending
were Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Byrd
and son, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas
Byrd, Mr. and Mrs. G.P.
Crowley and children all of San
Antonio, Mr. and Mrs. F.a.
Meyer of Corpus Christi, Mr.
and Mrs. Dennis Dorris and
sons of Arlington, Mr. Kenneth
Dorris of Conroe, Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Byrd and daughter of
Harlingen, Mr. and Mrs. Dale
Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Mike
Newberry and children all
from San Benito. Special
guests were the grandparents
of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. M.
C. Nelson of Alamo.
The reception was held in
the Fellowship Hall of the
church Topping the three-
tiered wedding cake were
snow white lovebirds.
Assisting in serving the cake
and punch were Mrs. Dennis
Dorris and Miss Phylis
Mettlach.
For travel the bride wore a
pale blue pantsuit. The couple
will reside in San Antonio.
Dorene and David were both
graduate of P.S.J.A. and both
attended Pan American Uni-
versity.
Pre-nuptials courtesies were
a shower given by her fellow
employees of Alamo Fruit and
Vegetable Co., also a rice bag
party given by Miss Phylis
Mettlach of Me Allen. The
rehearsal dinner was hosted
by the grooms parents, Mr.
and Mrs. David H. Byrd, and
was held in the church
fellowship hall.

Mrs. Janet Vereker Shrum,
51, a lifetime resident of Pharr
before moving to San Antonio
four years ago, died there
Wednesday after a short
illness.
Graveside services were
held Saturday June 14 in
Valley memorial gardens for
Mrs. Shrum.
Employed by Holiday inn c
McAllen and San Antonio, she
was a member of the Eagle
Lodge of Pharr, Auxiliaries of
Pharr, and Sons of Herman.
Mrs. Schrum is survived by
her husband, Charles Schrum
of San Antonio; one daughter,
Barbera Ann Contreras of
Alamo; one son, James M.
Deaton of Falfurrias; her
mother, Florence Vereker;
two brothers Jimmy Vereker
of Pharr and Richard Vereker
of McAllen; three sisters, Mrs.
Sue Hunter and Mrs. Sandra
Obst of Alamo and Mrs. Judy
Drewy of Edinburg.
Funeral arrangements were
taken care of by Skinner
Funeral Home of Pharr.
