SOUTHERN PACIFIC RE-
CEIVES 5,000 NEW CARS
Of the 15,750 freight and re-
frigerator cars ordered for
Southern Pacific’s account since
V-J Day, only about 5,000 have
been depivered to date because
of plant difficulties encountered
by builders, including a shortage
of car construction materials.
This was reported today by A.
T. Mercier, president ofthe rail-
road, who pointed out that
Southern Pacific’s postwar or-
ders for rolling stock, including
half ownership of refrigerator
cars purchased for Pacific Ex-
press,, call for an expendiure of
over $86,000,000.
In connection with the delay
in getting new equipment, atten-
tion was also called to the fact
that a sizable number of
freight cars have been built in
the United States for export to
foreign countries.
Currently being delivered in
considerable volume are new re-
frigerator cars from the orders
for 5,000 such cars for Pacific
Fruit Express, Mr. Mercier said.
Approximately 1,650 of these
have been placed in service and
the rest are scheduled to be de-
livered by the end of December.
This will give Pacific Fruit Ex-
press, largest operator of re-
frigerator cars in the world, a
fleet of about 40,000 cars
There remain undeliveryed
7,200 freight cars, other than
refrigerator cars, on orders
placed by Southern Pacific, and
of these nearly 3,400 are now
promised before the end of the
year, it was stated. These de-
liveries would include 1,750 box
cars, 500 automobile cars, 1,029
gondola cars and 100 sulphur
cars.
Southern Pacific’s huge post-
war equipment orders include
twenty 6,000-horsepower Die-
sel- electric freight locomotives,
but only two have arrived and
are in service. Delivery of the
remaining 18 is expected to
start in October and complet-
ed by the end of January.
Other Diesel - electric equip-
ment recently acquired by the
railroad includes five 6,000-
horsepower passenger locomo-
have just been delivered, and
23 additioinal switchers, which
are now in service.
In commenting on President
Mercier’s announcement, E. A.
Craft, executive vice president
of the company’s lines in Texas
and Louisiana, said that the 23
Diesel-electric switchers deliver-
ed are all in service at various
points on the company’s lines in
Texas and Lauisiana. He also
said that the 100 sulphur hand-
ling cars are being built in com-
pany shops under direction of
the company’s mechanical offi-
cers stationed at Houston head-
quarters.
