RATS MAY SPREAD
TRICHINOSIS
TO HOGS
Hogs have been found to pick
up the disease, trichinosis, from
feed contaminated by rats afflic
ter with the disease, livestock
health authorities report.
The finding is of specific sg-
nifcance, the offcials say, be-
cause rats usually thrive where
animals are fed and where gar-
bage is disposed of. Uncooked
garbage itself can be the source
of trichinae, if it contains scraps
of raw pork.
Since rats also can spread
other diseases this is an added
reason for a thorough rat-con-
trol program on every farm, the
report adds.

SHEEP WITH SORE
MOUTH CAN INFECT
HANDLERS
Sheep that develop blisters on
the mouth, gums, or tongue
should be hanlded cautionsly, say
veterinary medical authorities.
They may have contagious
ecthyma (sore mouth) a virus
disease which can spread to the
owners who are working with
them. Several cases have been
reported recently among west-
ern ranch workers. Laboratory
employees handling live virus
vaccine also have picked up the
infection. It usually affects
sheep under a year old, and al-
most always appears in lambs
being fattened for market. The
soreness may interfere with eat
ing and thus slow down weight
gains. Since the disease can
spread rapidly to the rest of the
flock, segregation of sick ani-
mals and prompt veterinary care
are generally recommended.
If there is no sidewalk, and
you must walk in roadway, walk
on left, facing traffic.

Malcolm H. Nutt, who has
place six miles northeast
Boerne on the Upper Kendalia
road, deferred part of his place
last year for about six months
during the growing season. He
moved his stock into winter on
this pasture last year and car-
ried them through the winter on
iy2 pounds of cake per head, anc
his cows were rolling fat until
this past summer when dry
weather began to tell on forage
production. Nutt rests at least
one or more pastures each year
during the growing season.

Raleigh Schuetz, located west
of Kendalia, has 23 acres of hu
bam clover this is doing good inn
spite of dry weather. His clo-
ver is three to four inches high
and is ready to make a good
growth when moisture does
come. He planted his oats and
clover in early September.
