Letters To Hie Editor
The fighting is over and where buzzards would be
ashamed to come home to roost birds w ith less character are
wanting to do just that' These peace birds flew to Canada and
Sweden to do their "nesting ' so they could escape their
obligation and patriotic duty It was their choice to leave
their country, a place unfit to live in. a country that would
have to apologue to them, a country they had bad mouthed
and called "The Agrvssor
With them still shipping our boys home in boxes and
same still missing in action, there is talk of amnesty for these
gutless Wanderers from the very ones that wanted to throw
the book at the boys that did go and broke under the pressure
of fighting an enemy they could not see, an enemy that had no
sex or age
These bleeding hearts would pin a medal on a man who
would jump into a life boat from a sinking ship while women
and children were still aboard, but can see no wrong slapping
hundreds of thousands of our dead and wounded servicemen
in the face by advocating amnesty for these deserters and
slackers The individual pushing amnesty is committing a
crime just as bad as the low life draft dodgers
It has never been the desires of any one to fight a war.
popular or not All wars have been fought to preserve our
freedom This we will lose if the one's who don’t fight are not
punished
We might as well start licking our enemy's boots now
Why should some give their lives for their country while
others shirk their duty knowing they can enjoy freedom
bought by others' blood’’ If a man will not serve his country
and defend the Constitutional rights and freedom ot America,
then his country owes him nothing
To a nation that lanes its patriotism, the end is only a
matter of time If a man feels nothing for hts country and his
flesh doesn't crawl when he sees the flag raised, he doesn't
belong here I wonder how many boys now lying in boxes
took the place of those now whining to come home They
made their bed. let them sleep in it.
If we let them come home free from their hideous crime,
then let us tear down our prisons, jails and abolish the enure
penal codes Why punish some for crimes and not others’ We
might as well go back to the fastest gun rule
This nation is on the skids of no return if it shows no
gratitude and respect for the ones that loved her enough to
die for her and start showing favoritism and doing the most
for the ones that have done the least for her
E C White
It is extremely unfortunate that one in our community.
Glen Wheeler is going through the mental and physical pain
he has been subjected to during the past weeks Likewise.
Butch Garrett certainly has had anguish over damage done
to someone he cared for. inflicted at his own hand and then
burdened with his livelihood relinquished as a result Harold
While has had this burdens and needs assurance that he has
the continued support that his position affords him even
though opinions may differ Our city manager. Pete Gildon.
has a rough and controversial decision making job. thereby
causing him at times to be at odds with groups or individuals
Charlottr Griffin, our only lady city council member, has at
times come under undue criticism due to her persistance in
service to the community and her desire to find truth and
justice within the city government
In the constant struggle to right wrong, seek justice and
fend for our own voice and opinion, we sometimes overlook
what others are feeling In the name of justice, many people
have been offended, feelings rubbed raw. and others rights
to an opinion somewhat ignored Because we are a
democracy we are given the right to express our views, no
mattler how they can conflict with others, without any fear
This liberty may be taken both in our elections and all thuigs
aired through city council meetings Yes. we may cause
waves and make emotions run high but this is what our
system is all about Weak links mended, stronger chains of
command are formed, and public servants strive harder to
attain what is by the people and for the people
Decisions are sometimes neither black or white but
rather shades of grey Neither right or wrong but done
Hopefully the people we select in governing positions will put
themselves in another's place and cautiously judge others’
actions with compassion as they themselves would like to be
handled
Hopefully. all feelings will heal along with Glen Wheeler,
and he will return to our community with good feelings and
know that with all the publicity given this unfortunate ac-
cident that his future health and welfare is certainly the
number one concern of the community With all the problems
we have, Portland is still a good place to live with good
people
