Members of the Portland
Baha’i community will gather
Sunday. Sept 15. at 4100
Wildcat Dr . Apt too, to ob-
serve World Peace Day,
inaugurated by the National
Spiritual Assembly of the
Baha’is of the United States in
1950
World Peace Day is com-
memorated annually by the
Baha'i community to em-
phasize America’s repon
sibiHty and destiny to raise the
standard of world peace
"Baha’is believe that the
United States will play an
important role in bringing
about world peace and unity,
w hich is so desperately needed
today." explained W Joyner,
secretary of the Baha'i com
munily "Ever since the
middle of the last century when
Raha'u'llah. the founder of the
Baha'i faith proclaimed the
need for collective security and
the eslablishmenf of universal
peace, the Baha’is have been
working toward that goal We
believe that world peace
cannot be attained until world
unity is firmly established,"
Joyner said
Baha’is maintain that all the
peoples and nations of the
world arc interdependent, thus
social, racial, political and
economic conflicts can only be
resolved by the application of a
world view The fundamental
doctrine upon which world
peace must be based is the
unity of mankind
Baha'is teach that the
prejudices which cause such
conflict are "subversive of the
They have lived here five
years
foundation of human society,
all lead to bloodshed all heap
ruin on mankind So long as
these remain, the dread of war
will continue ...”
Other Baha’i principles
which support this doctrine
include the equality of men and
women, the oneness of religion,
the need for a universal
language, and universal
education, and the basic
harmony between science and
religion
