Phase Out
Of Pirates Seen
BY KEITH GUTHRIE
The football season has now moved past the halfway
mark and in District 15 3A no big surprises have occured
The predicted leaders are out in front, the middle level
teams are doing fair and the cellar teams are having lots of
win less Fridays About the only real big switch has been
Aransas Pass The Panthers were seen as a better than-
average and they have turned out much less than average
The Big Red Machine of Gregory Portland had no
trouble in disposing of the Bishop Badgers last week and
should have much less of a problem in keeping their winning
ways going with Flour Bluff this week The Hornets will
probably be wistfully thinking about the night a couple of
years ago when they scored an upset over the Cats, but
Kenny Adams and his teammates will have to look elsewhere
for a victory
Sinton stayed undefeated this past week -but. they had
their problems with the improving Rock port team, in fact,
the Pirates had a 18 to 12 lead going into the final minutes of
the game
Bob Hutchins remains as an “explosive" quarterback for
Sinton. but it is fullback Mike Pawlik that continues to eat up
the yardage for Sinton
Rated high at the first of the season. Sinton has managed
to stay undefeated in district play, but have not been too
impressive in the process They will be matched Friday night
against Coach Bill Rhyme's Tuloso Midway Warriors in what
should be the No I game in the district this week
Rhyme's son. Joel, a big, promising fullback, scored
three touchdowns last week against Taft This young man is
sure to make his mark in this area before he winds up his
playing career at Tuloso We think that he'll probably get
started this week and we’re going with the Warriors in a close
shave over the Pirates
Another big game in the district will pit the Badgers
against the Bears This should be a real tough game and one
that could go either way Larry Urban was never able to live
up to his billing as a passer against G-P last week and we re
betting that Stan Limuel, Clarence Henderson and Richard
Mayfield will be in top form Friday night and be able to carry
the Bears to victory over Bishop The Bears have potentially
the best bunch of backs in the district
Calallen takes their football fortune to Aransas Pass this
week The Wildcats are two games up in district play this
year, while the Panthers are winless AP finally found out
how to score TDs last week against Flour Bluff, but we
believe that Coach Grey ’s disciplined Wildcats will lie able to
(Hill this one out of the fire by a close call
Rockport probably showed more determination and fire
last week than any team in almost downing Sinton This week
they play at Taft against the floundering Hounds Taft will be
trying mightly to get into the win column, but we ll have to go
along with the Pirates
