mat Is Art?
By Vi CoHey
Art is as old as the human
rate
It is inherent in man.
educated, or a savage in the
most desolate land In
Australia, who has never
learned to build himself a
house, or even how to wear
clothes But, he developed an
interesting art of his own So
far man has never found a man
without some sort of artistic
expression
So one need not search to
know that there is art, but the
question of, "What is Art0” is
on every lip This one ex-
pression, one hears moat at any
art exhibition, ‘‘What is art-’ I
don't know a thing about art,
but I do know what I like."
This would be a good thing, if
any one artist could convince
all people that what he paints is
the final word in art, all of the
other artists would be unable to
practice their idea of art, the
work that is their soul s desire
I believe that all men are
convinced that art has an
enobling influence, with a
.tendency to turn man and
women into better citizens
and I am sorry to say. that
many artists, (questionable, or
otherwise i who often think of
themselves so talented that
they are set apart from the
average man
But. when one realizes that
God's rain falls on the unjust,
as well as on the just And when
we come face to face with the
question with which we are
trying to deal, the ar! spirit, we
soon find that it is like
Adrenalin in the blood stream,
when in one’s work, he feels he
is moved by the art spirit, for
the spirit is the life principel
that moves one to joy in his
work When he is forced into
work that he does not enjoy, he
is often forced to do so many
things he hates to do
We may goon theorizing, but
in the end we know the man
horn to be a painter, says "I
think I see.” Then he reveals in
his work what he thinks he has
seen in such a way that all may
see
The musician says '“Oh, I
hear" The notes he hears may
be silent to our ears until he
has refined them and brought
forth divine music to move us
all
The poet knows he can best
express in words, and the
novelist must tell his revelation
in story.
A true sculptor sees a piece
of perfect marble, and at once
sees an angel
While the architect, in no less
elation, visions soaring
buildings, and the man who
delights in girders and arches,
sees vast soaring spans across
rivers and great chasmns
^The butcher feels the same
joy as he sees his beautifully
precise cuts of meat
The baker knows that bread
is the staff of life, and joys in
his perfect loaves
The candlestick maker
strives forever to the beauty
and lustre of his candlesticks
A man beholds the moving
art-spirit in all that he really
enjoys doing in his work if he
has chosen the medium that is
his by an inherent talent
The greatest satisfaction in
life lies in what we like to do in
our life's work But all must
remember that it is harder to
see than it is to express
Children should be taught this
during their formative years.
The mind of man is truly
God like, he can embrace all
that is good, as well as resist all
that is evil . "He can you
know"'
