OFFENSIVE STALWARTS—The offensive linemen on a team usually receive less
recognition than any group and probably do more work than any group. This group of
tackles and guards have been clearing the holes that has made it possible for Wildcat backs
to slack up big yardages this year. They are bottom row , I to r, Floy F lores, Gug Myer,
Mark Hopper and Oscar Sabedra. Standing. I to r. Randy Albrecht. David McNair and
Darwin Bauctim.

ROUGH ON OPPONENTS—The names of these three G-P

last Friday night in the Raymondville game. Between these
three boys they accounted for the bulk of the tackles. They

city Friday night. Everyone

the Gregory-Portland Wildcats
against the Lockhart Lions in
the quarter finals of the state
3A football race. Game time

“This is going to be
the toughest game of
the season for us,
“coach Ray Akins told his boys
as he went over game plans
with them this week “We know
that Lockhart has a big, fast
team that likes to pass and we
know that they are capable of
moving the ball — we have to
find a way to stop them.”
Coach Akins not only has had
to worry about preparing his
game plans for Friday night
but he has had to keep one eye
on the doctor’s list as quite a
few of the Wildcats have been
sick this week Several of the
first string boys have been out
sick one or two days this week
and if the weather continues to
be disagreeable it is entirely
that the Wildcats will be
missing the services of several
key men Friday night

Lions have one of the best
passing games that we have
run into this year.” Coach
Akins said “They have a good
passer and a couple of
receivers who are 6’4” and
fast.” The Lions employ an “I”
passing formation with a
wingback split to either side.
The quarterback is adept at
passing, pitching out to a
halfback coming round or
handing off to the fullback over
the center of the line.
“We know that they have
excellent blocking out in front
of their runners,’ the coach
said, “and it will be a job
containing their big backs.”
On defense the Lions have
four front men who are close to
the 200 pound mark and rated
by the scouts as “good.”
Coach Akins spent the better
part of Monday going over
Lockhart films with his boys
and working out their plans for
the game.
Other state playoff games of
interest to G-P fans in 3A will
pit Silsbee and Brenham,
Plano and Jacksonville and
Brownwood and Andrews. The
winner of the G-P and Lockhart
cage season last week by
topping Bishop 20 to 13. Jake
Rios was high point man with 9.
