Shirley Rowe Means
—A Winning Team
Shirley Rowe mi about to take
her sixth G-P girl* vottiybal)
tram to a stair tournament
Quite an accomplishment
and probably one that no other
volleyball roach in the state of
Texas ran match What makes
it a singular achievement is the
fact that a state wide
volleyball tournament has
been in existance in Texas only
for the past seven years, so.
Coach Kowe probably knows
her way around the state
volleyball tournament better
than anyone
Coach Howe has been at
Gregory Portland High School
for 12 years, coming here from
Taft where she coached for
several years Previous lo that,
she taught in Port Lavaca She
is a graduate of Southwest
Texas Slate University She
and her husband make their
home at 1714 Dallas
Hard work is probably the
key word in Coach Rowe’s
sw eets story at a coach She is
not one lo expound at length on
coaching principles but after
watching her put one of her
teams through a workout the
casual observer gets the idea
thal the hard driving coach
extracts the last ounce of
ability out of her girls and then
the girls go the extra mile
for their coach - the result A
winning learn
The volleyball dynasty at
Gregory Portland got started
eight years ago when the girls
won the district championship
Since that time the Ladycats
have won the district crown
each year and advanced on into
state play six of these years
Nol only have Rowe-coached
volleyball teams dominated
the state scene, but G-P has
had its share of winning teams
in basekelball The Ladycats
were a power in basketball in
the late 1960 s when they
walked off with four district
championships In 1962 they
had a team in the regional
battles, in 1964 they were again
district champions and in 1967
they went to the semifinals in
the state and the following year
they went to the state finals
Since 1966 the G-P teams
have been in the thick of
district wars but haven't had
as much luck as in earlier
years when gtrls'baskctball
was played in junior high
school as well as high school
Several years ago the school
system elected to drop girls’
basketball as a competitive
sport at the junior high level
and as a result the good supply
of basketball players began to
dry up a) the high school level
Coaches claim that it is dif-
ficult to develop a girl
basketball player fully in high
school without the junior
training
Coach Rowe will take her
volleyball team to Austin
Friday. April 27. for a game
with Lamesa at 9 30 a m
Saturday The finals will be
Saturday afternoon

the Warriors came to bat in the

three hits, three walks and
three errors to come up with

Larry Meadows started
things off for the G-P boys in

followed by a pass for Jim West
and Shorty Armastrong A wild

Ladycats Go To State Saturday
Football, baseball, tennis,
hockey, golf- almost every
sport has its great stars
Outstanding individuals
usually rise head and shoulders
above their team mates to lead
then to glory
Such is not the case in
volleyball
It is a team sport from the
serve to the spike and team-
work is absolutely essential if
victory is to be achieved
Naturally, individual players
are stronger in one phase of the
game than the others but all
players have to be all-around
good in order to prouce a
winning team
The ladycats of Gregory-
Portland High School have a
smooth, efficient volleyball
team It rolled through a
successful season, won the
district tournament withoiut a
defeat and went on lo sweep to
victory in the regional meet
Now. this Saturday at 9:30 a m
they will enter the state
volleyball playoffs in Austin.
Volleyball essentially in-
volves four basic playing
techniques First, it is a must
to have strong servers in order
to be able to score (You score
in volleyball only when you are
serving! Secondly, in order to
keep your opponents from
cramming the serve down your
throat you must have a good
pickup players, that is. people
capable of getting their hands
on the serve and keeping it tn
play. Once the ball is in play
then girls who are proficient in
Ihe set-up take over A set-up
player takes the ball that has
been picked up and arches it
Wildcats Down Tigers
game Millsap got things going
when he drew a walk and
Schellhauxe got on base on a
fielders choice He stole second
and Pena came through with a
sharp single to send two runs
across the plate
Pud Meier pitched the first
three innings and was relieved
by Millsap when the Warriors
had their big rally underway
Millsap got credit for the
victory
William Daniel set the
Carroll Tigers down with three
hits Monday as the Wildcats
defeated the visitors 4 to 1
Daniel went four innings
before he gave up a hit and
then he allowed only one hit per
inning in Ihe next three frames
with Ihe lone run coming on a
home run by Feamstar in the
sixth inning
Larry Meadows drew a walk
in the second inning to open the
scoring for the Cats Two
singles by Jim West and
Russell Dickson got things
moving and then an error
helped G-P gel two runs in the
inning They came right back
in Ihe next inning when Pud
Meier led off with a single,
stole second and made it home
on a fly to left field West drew
a base on balls, advanced when
Dickson walked, and then
came home on a wild pitch
Meier led the batters with
two hits in three tnps to the
plate.

easily into a position close to
Ihe net where the spike player
can slam it home for a point
Perhaps the player who
delivers the spike seems to be
(he hero but she couldn't have
performed without the other
two girls, so, it is a chain
reaction. team-work
proposition that brings victory
The I-adycats are blessed
with girls who excel! in all four
departments, and that, of
course, is why they are
champions
Elaine Rackley. a senior
letterman is primarly a spiker.
She does a good job of avoiding
blockers, has a good serve and
performs well all over the
court, but she really shines at
hammering the ball into Ihe
opponents’ court for a no
return
Colleen Murphy is a junior
and is classed as a set-up
player She is also consistent
server and capable spiker. but
when possible Colleen moves in
lo make Ihe sel-up for Ihe
spikers.
Pat McFarland is a
sophomore and will have lots
more time to star for the G-P
team, but she has proved a
main stay of the team this year
as a set-up player and a spiker
She also has a good serve with
a top spin which causes it to
drop sharply after clearing Ihe
net.
Loree Watson is a junior set-
up specialist Fine defensive
work is also her specialty as
well as a good serve
Jenny Rackley is one of two
sophomores on the team. She
plays as a set up but is also
developing as a great spiker
Good on defense, she has an
unusual amount of hustle
throughout Ihe game
Carol James, a junior, is
quick and performs well as a
setup player. Her fine
defensive work and good serve
make her a top notch player
Dawn Kirkpatrich, Ihe other
sophomore on the squad, plays
as a spiker and also does a good
job of blocking She has been
developing at a fast pace this
year
These seven girls, con-
sidered as the first Ladycat
team, is backed up by Rhea
lfoskinson and Lisa Holloway,
both sophomores and both good
spikers, and by Carol Erck,
Janet Erck and Barbara
Kaigler. all good in relief spots
