1974 Brought Radical
Change To One Couple
There have been quite a few
changes in the lives of at least
one Taft Portland family tn
1974 some good but one quite
tragic
This time last year Gary
French of Portland and
Miriam Morgan French of Taft
were relative newlyweds They
had been married in the fall of
1973. had a cozy apartment and
later a small house, kept their
old friends and made new ones,
and were planning for the
future
Part of that future was a
family, but first Gary fulfilled
a long time ambition to be a
welder He went to Del Mar
Tech in the evenings and
earned his credentials
This spring he was accepted
into the union, and he began a
senes of 12-hour days and six
day weeks on a 'turn around”
for a large company
In the meantime they
learned that their first baby
was due this fall Things were
looking up
Then came July R Gary was
out on his motorcycle per-
forming a road fesf after some
repair work He was getting
ready to sell the cycle
He crashed into a grain truck
on a country road near Taft,
and underwent emergency
surgery in a Corpus Christi
hospital He had suffered in
fernal injuries and a broken
neck
After several months in
hospitals in Corpus and
Houston, he relumed home to
stay - early this month
Confined to a wheelchair. Gary
has regained movement and
feeling only from hit chest up
Shortly before hts return
from the Houston hospital, hts
son. Gary Wayne Jr . was bom
The son. to he called Wavne. is
seven weeks old today
Soon Gary will he able to get
out of his wheelchair, at least
temporarily The Texas
Rehabilitation Commission
people have given him a set of
hand controls to be installed on
any automobile with power
steering power brakes, and
automatic transmission As
soon as he gains confidence
and a little more strength, and
his father installs the device,
he can drive
One of those places he may
drive next September is Del

RECESSION. YES-DEPRES
SION NO
When President Ford made
hts first economic policy
proposals to Congress, the
problem of inflation was
foremost in the thinking of the
public At that time, many
political aspirants and incum
bents anxious to remain in
office with biennial elections
looming Just ahead-criticized
the Administration for appa
rently giving more attention to
warding off or coping with the
recession than to battling
inflation But the staff of

a ramp for the wheelchair,

Tribune
Babson's Reports took a
contrary view, pointing out
that, without playing down the
seriousness of inflation. Presi
deni Ford's speech may have
read the economic climate
more correctly that before too
long fear of recession might
outpace fear of inflation
There is no douhl that concern
over recession has assumed
grave proportions Inflation,
unfortunately, is no less acute,
but the freshet of layoff
announcements in the last
weeks of 1974 not only increased
apprehension over the recession
but brought talk of the
possibility of a full-fledged
depression In the light of
political, international, and
economic upheavals which have
sapped public confidence for
more than a year, this radical
shift in thinking comes as no
great surprise It is, however,
the contention of the staff of
Babson's Reports that a
depression on the order of that
seen in the I93(is is not in the
cards for 1975 Recessionary
conditions will prevail for most
of the new year, reflecting
extension of the weakening that
began in the fall of 1973 when
the Arab oil embargo gave
inflation its first brisk fillip The
label of recession was affixed
when the statistical results for
the first two quarters of 1974
became available* meeting the
textbook definition of recession,
with two consecutive quarterly
declines in the nation's real
Gross National Product (GNP
in 1958 dollars -ex inflation).
CUSHIONS AGAINST A
DEPRESSION
Comparing the present time
with some years ago. we are
aware of a great many changes
of an adverse nature From the
end of World War II through the
better part of the 1960s there
existed a period of high growth
when both domestic and
international economies were
busily attempting to fulfill
pent-up demand and the
burgeoning needs of exploding
populations Then, credit was
