Harris Likes To Win
— And Does
George Harris, Gregory-
Portland track coach, likes to
win—he was a winner back in
his high school and college
days and since he has been
head track coach for the
Wildcats, he has won a total of
33 track meets, won four
district crowns and two
regional titles
Harris came to the Gregory-
I’ortland School System in 1960
as the junior high coach, a
position that he filled four
years until he moved up to
head varsity track and "B”
team football coach
He is a native of Three
Kivers and while he was in high
school he was a member of a
team that won the state
championship
After finishing high school he
enrolled at Victoria Junior
College and was a member of a
team that won the National
Junior College championship
His speciality was the 100-yard
dash with a time of 9 9 and the
220-yard dash with a time of
21 8
Helping young athletes
develop their full potential and
seeing them go on to college,
has been one of the highlights
of Harris' career "I've had the
privilege of coaching some
boys that have developed from
nonwinners into champions."
the coach said He pointed with
George Harris
pride to the achievements of
Ben Greathouse who developed
from a high jumper that was
unimpressive into clearing 6'4"
and winning fourth in the state
as a senior Greathouse went
on to become a Southwest
Conference champion at A&M
with a Jump of 6'11",
Several other of Harris’ boys
have done well in college track
in addition to Greathouse Tito
Garza, who placed second in
the stale in the 880-yard dash
with a time of 1 56 in 1968. went
