Brown & Root
Plans New Facility
Brown & Root, Inc , one of
the world's leading
engmeenng construction com '
panies, has announced
plans to establish a facility in
the Corpus Christ! area to
fabricate steel structures and
decks for offshore oil and gas
production
The firm, a subsidiary of
Halliburton Company, initially
will operate from company
owned property at Ingleside
For the time being, fabrication
of deck sections will be the
primary function of this
operation
At the same time, the
company will begin
preparation of a 300-acre site at
Aransas Pass adjacent to State
Highway 361 on the Corpus
Christi Ship Channel It is
estimated that the Harbor
Island fabrication yard will be
ready for production of jackets
and decks by the first quarter
of 1976
"Four years ago,” said
Delbert Ward, Brown & Root
senior group vice president,
"we bought the Aransas Pass
property with the idea that
additional Gulf of Mexico
fabrication facilities would be
needed to accomodate in-
creased offshore activities of
the oil and gas industry With
domestic energy reserves in a
current state of short supply,
the time has arrived to estalish
the new marine yard "
The Aransas Pass facility
will serve as a supplemental
operation to the firm’s Greens
Bayou Marine Fabrication
Yard near Houston The
company has been engaged in
construction of offshore
facilities at this site since the
1940 s Opening of the new
yard. Ward said, will enable"
the firm to keep pace with a
growing demand for per-
manent offshore structures
Also, the Corpus Christi area
facility will not affect the
company's plans to develop
another fabrication operation
near Cape Charles, Va
In order to assure an
adequate supply of skilled
personnel. Brown & Root plans
to operate a continuing
training program at Corpus
Christi with the cooperation of
Del Mar College
Initially, welders and fitters
will undergo training at a site
to be selected by Del Mar of-
ficials. and some additional
training will take place at the
company's Ingleside yard
The training program is
expected to begin in mid-1975
Currently at Ingleside,
Brown & Root's Oilfield Ser
vices Division is engaged in
various activities including
preparation of oilfield drilling
locations, construction of
roads, earth fills, drainage
ditches, canals, bridges
years experience including 10
years in the marine con
struction industry, was named
manager of the Harbor Island
fabrication yard Murphy
formerly served as chief
engineer at Brown & Root's
Houston marine division
operation
Assistant manaer of the
Harbor Island facility is lairry
Stewart, whose 10 years with
Brown & Root have been
primarily in marine
engineering and construction
Preparation of the 300-acre
ship channel site will include
dredging of a 25-foot deep
channel extending from the
Corpus Christi ship channel to
a point 1,000 feet inside the
company's property
Other initial work will be
construction of 10,000 feet of
earthen dikes and filling in of a
72-acre area on the property
Additionally, a bulkhead will
be constructed All work will be
performed by Brown It Root
The structures, or "jackets",
and decks to be fabricated at
(he new yard form the base for
permanent offshore drilling
and production facilities
The structure is the sup
porting framework which
extends from the sea bottom to
a distance above storm wave
heights
Components are fabricated
and assembled into a single
structure onshore, loaded onto
barges for transport to a pre
selected offshore site, laun
ched. set on the ocean floor,
and then anchored by driving
steel piling through the hollow
legs of the structure
The deck refers to the units
which are fabricated for
placement on the supporting
structure The decks ac-
comodate drilling rigs and
production equipment such as
tanks, pumps, valves and
fittings, and. where necessary,
complete living quarters for
operating personnel.
These units, too, are com
pletely assembled onshore,
loaded onto barges, towed to
the offshore structure, and
lifted into place by floating
cranes
The Corpus Christi area site
is particularly suited to the
fabrication of the large
structures necessary for
deepwater locations in the Gulf
of Mexico since the site
provides easy access to the gulf
without passing beneath
bridges
Activities of the Aransas
i’ass and Ingleside operations
are centered on fabrication
the joining of metal to metal
and no air pollution nor water
pollution would result from
work at either site
Brown & Root is no stranger

firm was constructing roads in

-dredging, and installation of —the Coastal Bend area in the-
production facilities such
tank batteries, compressor
stations, gas treating facilities,
dehydration plants, pipeline
pump stations, and pipelines
The division has been
operating out of its Ingleside
headquarters since 1970, and
operations will continue there
with only a portion of the
property being used for deck
fabrication
Brown & Hoot expects to
open employment offices for
the Ingleside Aransas Pass
operations in March 1975 The
company estimates that 200
people will be employed at the
new yard by early 1976
The total should grow to 300
by mid-1977 and to 400 within
six to eight months after that
Crafts involved will include
welders, fitters, riggers,
painters, and some carpenters
"It is our desire," said Ward,
"to establish an orderly growth
pattern for the employee team
of the Aransas Pass yard
While it will bo necessary to
move a small supervisory
force into the area initially, the
majority of employees selected
and trained will be established
residents "

a vote of
confidence
in business.
(or how to tell the leaders
without a scorecard.)
Recently there has been a lot of talk about upturns,
downturns, and sideturns in business and industry.
You ask a man these days how the "outlook" appears
to him, and you’re liable to get a diagonal reply. Not
a straight up-and-down nod Not even a negative, side-
ways shake of the head
It f
W
Mostly the diagonal approach. It doesn't mean
business is going up. It doesn't mean no, it isn't.
yes,
'V
The answer you frequently get is we'll wait and see.
Inflation and some of the other unrests, you know
So the man and hts company pull their horns in.
They wai* for someone else to "take the lead," they
say: No sense sticking our heads out until the situa-
tion "improves" itself.
In other words, sure we'll advertise — or restore our
budgets — just as soon as we get more business.
Beautiful.
Everyone hangs around and waits for everything to
happen automatically. Hold up. Cut back. Wait. The
Prosperity Wagon is right around the corner. And it's
going to come to me, old friend, me. Without me
going out to get it.
Want to bet?
One thing about this economy of ours has never
changed A lack of confidence in our business system,
manifested across business, only inspires more of the
same. With the result that that wagon may be farther
down the block than you think.
Business activity stimulates business.
Advertising helps you get sales.
Companies, agencies and media that advertise should
be the ones you do business with, because we suspect
you'd rather do business with confident people.
