Owing to the necessities of the paper
In its Infancy and to financial und legal
entanglements lor which Tiik uukttk
Is lu no wise responsible It had become
so hampered that nothing short of heroic
treatment seemed equal to Its relief
Temporary suspension was therefore
determined upon it was not Intended
that tho suspension should last more than

on the Monday following tho suspension
a melancholy deatli arrested all atten
tion Day nltor day a succession ol un-

continue negotiations between the news-

The decreaso In the assessed valuation
of some of tho older and nonprogrcs lvc
counties in Kastern and Southern Texas
Is easily accounted for as well as the In
crease In the growing counties of the
West but there are some figures ol the
assessment returns not so easily explica-
ble Why should Kills county one of
the most promising the best agricultural
and among the wealthiest connjles In
Texas show a decrease of 8800000 while
McLennan adjoining It possessing no
advantages over Kills adds a million to
Its assessment
losslbly tho Kills county assessor was
not as stout In kecplngup a falrvaiuatlon
as tho McLennan county olllcer Probably
a more reasonable explanation lain the
tendency of the large towns to attract
and absorb wealth from the country Wo
do not know what proportion of the In-
crease In McLennan belongs to Waco
and what to the surrounding county but
very likely the city can show a larso pro
portion of It Kills county Is cldUIy ag-
ricultural with no town of Importance
enough to bring much foreign capital to
It Nearly every county which has shown
any gloat Increase of wealth contains one
of the chief cities of the state wniic t ose
In which there Is less wealth shoivn than
u year ago are almost wholly agricultural
or pastoral The towns are btilhltug up

jority is almost entirely made uji of pres
idents or attorneys of railroad or national

thought to bo Inimical to the welfare of
the people And wiiul makes tlio matter
more deplorable there Is no sign that the
Republican paity Is conscious of any im-

pire by men who are sent there by cor-

Public attention now being attracted
towaul tho subject of strikes by those
In operation against two of the strongest
railroad corporations In the state Tin
GAisni cannot but remark upon tho
rare occurrence of such disturbances lu
tho South as compared with their fre
quency lu the North In this considera-
tion wo do not Include tho strike against
tlio Wabash road as a Southern trouble
that company being purely u Northern
corporation which has no connect Ion
with the South except in so far as its
lines of road pass through this section
Tho outbreak had Its inolplency In the
North and Is directed against the cor-
poration in Now York The strike
against tho Santa IV roul Is
tho first sign ol serious differences
between a Southern Institution mannered
by Southern men and Its employes that
Is known of within the rteeut past
In tho North strikes excite little com
moiits so frequent Is their occurrence
Massachusetts Ionusylvinla und Ohio
aro the chlet eenters of such troubles
and it sooins that In those states there Is
an unceasing conflict between employers
and employes accompanied by rioting
and destruction of property At the
present time there aro thousands of
workmen locked out ol the Massachu-
setts cotton mills and shoo factories the
Pennsylvania collieries aud Iron mills
and the Ohio rollingmills There aro
more factories mid more workmen lu the
North than In the South and If strikes
are lu proportion to thu number of those
engagedIn tlicm they would necessarily
be of greater frequency In those states
Tho manufacturing Interests of the South
arc not however insignificant Georgia
and South Carolina have several thou-
sand operatives In their cotton mills and
Alabama and Tennessee employ armies
of miners ami workers In their Ironmills
but we never hear ol strikes there This
Is on evidence ol contentment at the
South which appears to bo unknown
elsewhere We can account for tills pa-
cific condition of Industry In our section
only by supposing that closer and more
friendly relations exist between em-
ployer and employed And this
It seems Is true Workmen receive
better treatment and are not of that tur-
bulent quarrelsome nature which distin-
guishes tho population of largo manufac-
turing towns In tho North where the
Ignorant foreign element with their
communistic ideas ami hatred of til es
tablished government are constantly
exciting disturbances Let us hope that
this more favorable condition will con-
tinue to prevail la tho South and that
the present conflict between the Santa
Fc company and Its employes will bo
settled lu a spirit ol fairness all around
