“The Seduction of Joe Tynan
is Alan Alda’s baby. The
popular star of TV's “M-A-S-H”
not only plays the title
:/role...he wrote the script.
:r I read an interview of Alda a
;; few years ago. He is an
articulate fellow, with an
r emphasis in his thinking on
'ii morality and social concern. He
t- also has a great sense of
humor. All of these facets of

% Don’t get me wrong. “The
seduction of Joe Tvnan” is not
amnzmHlY KIDS
an easy film to watch. It is
about and idealistic U.S.
Senator whose ambition some-
times causes him to com-
promise his ideals.
Q“Oh, it’s a film about politics,”
you say. Yes, but it’s much
more than that. Basically, it’s a
study in human psychology.
There is no difficulty, because
the story is well told, in
identifying with Joe Tynan.
Hence the discomfort. We see
what’s happening to him, and
don’t like it, but we’re getting
sucked in right along with him.

Alda, is a highly attractive
figure. He is a relatively young
senator, but an extremely
effective one, devoted to the
cause of the “little man”, and
untiring in his efforts on his
constituents’ behalf.
On the other hand, like all
politics, he has been helped
along by others. When the
time comes to return the
favor, will he do so, even if it’s
politically damaging to him-
self? What if it involves
compromising his ideals? What
if there are past promises
involved?
And what about his family?
His dedication to his job has
almost torn them apart. His
wife has become a
psychologist, largely because
she had formerly needed
counseling herself. She broke
down while campaigning for
Joe, and still resents politics.
As for the Kids, they hardly
know their dad because he’s in
Washington through the week
and only comes home to New
York on the Weekends...and
only some weekends at that,
then there’s the beautiful
Louisiana labor lawyer, played
by Meryl Streep. She shares
Joe’s liberal goals, and his
zeal, and does a lot of helpful
investigation for him. Can we
blame him for being attracted
to her? (The “seduction” of the
title takes place at a number of
different levels.)
The main conflict in the
story centers around a
presidential nomination to the
Supreme Court. The proposed
Justice is a southern
conservative. Joe Tynan is a
northern liberal. He leads the
opposition to the nomination.
In doing so, he battles Sen.
Birnev, played by Melvyn
Douglas. Birney is an elderly
senator, somewhat senile, but
one who has helped Joe
before, and is now asking for a
favor in return. Suffice it to
say that the battle is a bloody
one.
Along the way, Joe’s
teenage daughter makes a
play for attention by getting a
tulip tattooed on her hind-
parts. She does get a bit of
attention. Mostly, though, she
just gets hepatitis.
His wife, played well by
Barbara Harris, blows up from
the tension of raising the kids
alone, and the suspicion that
Joe is being unfaithful.
With political success on one
hand and familial disaster on
the other, Joe is faced with a
choice. He needs to devote
himself to one or the other: His
career or his family. He can’t
do both.
I won’t divulge the film’s
ending. I will say, though, that
the conclusion makes one thing
clear: the important thing the
makers want to convey does
not ride on his final choice.
Rather, they are most
concerned with the ex-
amination of how he got there.
The film has great
psychological depth. It also has
the integrity not to paint it’s
characters in black and white,
as totally good or evil. They
are various shades of
grey., including the centeal
figure.
Alda and friends have put
together a powerful and
realistic character study, a
rare cinematic accomplish-
ment. “The Seduction of Joe
Tynan” raises the question of
what to do with the ambition
withing us all.

The purpose of the task

basis upon which NSBA policy

formulated for the 1980 NSBA

and that would be used in
testimon and in other ways
during the vocational

process beginning next year.

authorization for Vocational
Education will expire in 1981.
he House Education and
Labor Comnittee and also the

Resources Committe will begin

basis for a new
reauthorization.

be stuctured using the format
of a seminar. Durnig the
seminar, there will be a
variety of speakers and each

One game does not a season make.
At this point, due to the unfortunate situation that our
football team is in, the phrase that I have just mentioned
above is the most important thing that we must remember.
Why? Because it is so true. Yes, we lost to McAllen. Yes,
our hopes and dreams of a second straight district
championship appears bleak. However, this does not mean
that the world has ended. This is why this phrase is so true.
Right now, our team is in an unfavorable position. We are
down by one game in district with two though games
still to come. Considering the way we lost to McAllen, it
appears that it is going to be a very rough battle.
Yet, despite this, our team will not surrender. They
proved this at McAllen, when they continued to fight to the
bitter end. We do not have a quitting team; we have a
persevering team. There is not one single football player on
the team who is a quitter. There will never be one.
Now that this has been revealed, or rather, re-defined,
there is one thing I would like to know:
Why are there so many people who are being hartsh
toward our football team? In fact, some people go so far as
to say that all is lost for a district shampionship. “Ther’sno
hope for the Bears. Let’s not cheer for them anymore.”
To them I say, “BULL. As pointed out earlier, our team
will not give up. They are going to give it all they got.
Since this is so, I feel that we in turn should not give up
on them. We must continue to sopporrt our team to the end
because they are giving 150 p-er cent of themselves, so why
shouldn’t we?
So, the next time you hear some one talking bad about
the Bears, please remind him that he probably cannoit do a
better job, so he should shut up.
One group of people who are hanging in there at the same
time is the vollyball team. Last Tuesday, the showed us
that they can do it as they defeated McAllen in two straight
sets. How’s that for all-around dedication to beating
McAllen?
Incidentaly, they are asking for more support. Why don’t
you show it by going to the next vollyball game?
Another group that showed their “Get up and go” was the
^rama club.
On the Saturday following
the PSJA-MCHi game, the
drama club rached the finals in
three events at the McAllen
UIL Practice Tournament.
The three events were: Solo
Acting Robert Gomez,
Impromted Speaking-Lynn
Taylor and Group Inpro-
visation-Robert Gomez, David
Martinez, Mark Patano,
Gilbert Cavazos, Viola Villegas
and Roger Lara. The last two
events were ranked fourth.
How about a big hand for these
students.

GEMUTLICHKEIT! Not all
Germans translate this word
exactly the same, but they all
agree it basically means “Good
