Community Calendar
15th Birthday Celebration-Mr. Agustin Fuentes and Mrs. San Juanita Fuentes of Pharr. Honored their
daughter Sonia on the occasion of her fifteenth birthday on Dec. 28th with a mass given by father Alfon-
zo Guevara at St. Margerets Mary Catholic Church. Followed by a dance at the American Legion of
Pharr. Refreshments were served to over 350 guest and friends attending. Sonia was escorted by Jaime
Fuentes.
Scout-O-Rama Tickets Sale
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and
Explorers of the Rio Grande
Council will begin this week to
sell tickets for the 1986 Scout-O-
Rama which will commemorate
the Texas Sesquicentennial
1836-1986.
Tickets will sell for $1.50 and
will entitle the purchaser to ad-
mission to the “Greatest Show in
the Valley” to be held February
22, 1986 at the Mercedes
Livestock Exhibit Building.
In addition the ticket will be
good for $2.00 off a large and
$1.00 off a medium Priazzo at
any Pizza Hut in the Valley plus
a free pitcher of a soft drink.

Service
Michael Runge
Sgt. Michael F. Runge, son of
Earl J. and Evelyn M. Runge of
Rural Route 1, Alamo, Texas,
has completed a U.S. Army
primary leadership course while
serving with the 3rd Infantry
Division in West Germany.
Students received training in
supervisory skills, leadership
principles and small unit
training techniques essential to
a first-line supervisor in a
technical or administrative en-
vironment.
Runge is a transport helicop-
ter repairer.
Jose De Leon
Staff Sgt. Jose R. De Leon, son
of Argelia Chapa of 813 W.
Bowe, Pharr, Texas, has
graduated from the U.S. Air For-
ce legal services course at
Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.
Graduates of the six-week
course learned court reporting,
preparation of legal documents,
and legal office administrative
procedures. They also earned
credits toward an associate
degree in applied science
through the Community College
of the Air Force.
De Leon is scheduled to serve
with the 97th Combat Support
Group at Blytheville Air Force
Base, Ark.
He is a 1973 graduate of
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High
School, Pharr, Texas.
Jose Arcaute
Marvine Pvt. Jose Arcaute,
son of Ruben and Raquel Ar-
caute of Route 1, San Juan, TX,
has completed recruit training at
Marine Corps Recruit Depot,
San Diego.
During the 11-week training
cycle, Arcaute was taught the
basics of battlefield survival. He
was introduced to the typical
daily routine that he will ex-
perience during his enlistment
and studied the personal and
professional standards
! traditionally exhibited by
Marines.
He participated in an active
physical conditioning program
; and gained proficiency in a
; variety of military skills, in-
cluding first aid, rifle
marksmanship and close order
drill. Teamwork and self-
discipline were emphasized
throughout the training cycle.
The Scouts will be selling
tickets to raise money for their
pack, post or troop; as well as
working for a variety of personal
prizes.
A wrist watch will be awar-
ded to both Cub Scout and Boy
Scout who are top ticket
salesman in each of the five
districts. Top awards for the
best ticket salesman in the Rio
Grande Council will be the
choice of a 10 speed or BMX
Bike.
A special incentive to the
young salesmen will be the op-
portunity to be a possible winner
of a color Computer.
Every boy that sells 10 or
more tickets is eligible.
Church Women Hold Meet
The McAllen, Pharr unit of
Church Women United will hold
its annual meeting Friday,
January 17, 1986 at the First
United Methodist Church, 221 N.
Main, McAllen. Fellowship will
be at 9:30 a.m. and the program
will start at 10 a.m.
McAllen attorney, Jim Rausch
will be the speaker. Mr. Rausch
is the founder of the refugee
program in Donna, in 1982. He
will speak on the refugee center
and how they work with the bor-
der patrol. He will also answer
any questions you may have. So
come and share in the
fellowship, be informed and
support your local Church
Women United group.

Larry West, evangelist from
West Monroe, Louisiana, will be
the speaker in a gospel meeting
with the Church of Christ, Fir
and East Sam Houston, Pharr.
January 19-22.
Mr. West has preaclied in
meetings and campaigns in 20
states in the last 10 years, as the
speaker on the World Radio
“We Care” program he speaks
on 130 station in the U.S.,
Canada and the Caribbean. His
TV spots have been siin in 30
states.
Larry was selected as one of
the “Outstanding Young Men of
America” for 1978 and 1980.
The sermon topics of Mr.
West’s lessons will be as follows:

The TEXANS
The “TEXANS” singing group
from Branson, Missouri (for-
merly known as “The Master’s
Four”) will present a Gospel and
Variety Concert on Monday,
January 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the
McAllen Civic Center: and on
Tuesday, January 21st at 7:00
p.m. at the Harlingen Municipal
Auditorium. Admission is $6 per
person.
The group was named “Num-
ber 1 Gospel Singing Group in
the State of Texas" for six con-
secutive years before moving
from Grapevine, Texas to Bran-
son, Missouri. In 1984 and 1985
they were named “Number 1
Singing Group of the Year” in
Branson.
Nebraska Picnic
The Nebraska Picnic will be
held at the McAllen Civic Center
on Thursday, February 6, 1986
with a pot-luck dinner at 12:00
noon. Registration will begin at
10:00 a.m. Following the dinner
there will be a program and door
prizes.
Ceramic Show
Ceramic Show January 25&26,
1986 at the McAllen Civic Cen-
ter. Sponsored by the Ceramics
International Association (a non-
profit organization). The show
will be open to the public Jan
25th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and
Jan 26th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Both seminars will be held at
the McAllen Hilton, 2721 South

AGC Banquet
The Rio Grande Valley Chap-
ter, Associated General Contrac-
tors of America, In., is having it’s
annual Installation of Officers
Banquet at the Harlingen Coun-
try Club, January 17th, 1986, at
7:00 p.m. New officers for 1986
will be installed and the Con-
tractor of the Year Award, for
the Rio Grande Valley Chapter,
will be made. Tickets are

Alaska Film
“Alaska - The Last Wilder-
ness”, a wildlife adventure film
sponsored by Frontera Audubon
Society of the Valley, will be
presented in person by the
producer, Dale Johnson, on
January 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the
McAllen Civic Center
Auditorium. Journey with Dale
Johnson to the last great wilder-
ness, Alaska. Explore the land
in four seasons of glorious
scenery and wildlife. Visit An-
chorage, whose skyscrapers
contrast to the wilderness that
surrounds the city. Rise above in
a hot air balloon, private jet, and
helicopter for awesome views of
Alaska’s terrain. Visit an
Eskimo Village, experience the
celebrated Anchorage to Nome
dog sled race, and watch a
spawning salmon return from
the sea. Moose, caribou, grizzly,
red fox, and beaver are all a
part of startling scenes from the
vast wilderness, Alaska.

door for $3.00 (1.00 for studen-
ts). The next film in the three
film series will be Willis Moore’s
“Images Of China Today” on
March 3.
