YEARS AGO
From the Files of
The Pharr Press
and
Rio Grande Valley 5un
10 Years Ago.—Sept. 28, 1967
The Valley was fighing its worst
flood in history this week with
many residential areas and much
farm land flooded for the first time
due to an overwhelming wall of
water coming down the Rio Grande
River.
The Rio Grande river had an un-
heard of flow of 1J5,000 cu. ft.
per second at Rio Grande City, due
to the rains of Hurricane Beulah.
A diversion dam at Mercedes in
the floodway went out causing a
major catastrophe for residents
alnng the Arroyo in Harlingen.
* * »
A picture on the front page
showed the floodway south of Pharr
covered with water from bank to
bank. Other pictures on the front
page showed damage at Seitz Super
Market and at Warden Pump Co.
* * •
Highway 83 is open from Pharr to
Laredo, There is a great deal of
flooding between the highway and
the river, however.
* * *
The major problem confronting
Pharr in the clean up after Beulah
is the repairs to the sewage, an-
nounces Mayor Bowe. There were
many cafe ins of old lines and
around man holes.
* * *
President Johnson was to make
a first hand tour of the Valley and
South Texas to view the damage
from Hurricane Beulah. He is to
make his tour Sept. 28th.
« V *
The state commissioner of health
has announced that military air
craft will spray the entire area,
with planes from the Naval Air
Station, Corpus.
* * *
Valley Community Center was
used as a shelter during the hurri-
cane with a maximum of 250 pre-
sent for each of four nights, states
Frank Alford, exec, director.
* * $
Farm to Market roads and other
rural roads are blocked everywhere
throughout the county, due to the
flooding caused by Hurricane
Beulah. There are great lakes of
water north of Pharr, San Juan,
Alamo, around Edinburg to the
west, north and east, at San Carlos
and south of McAllen-Mission.

The Editor took a boat ride Sept.
26th in the floodway—one we never
dreamed we would take. It was a
wonderful ride and we recommend
it. It gives you a conception of the
massiveness of this flood that you
cannot secure otherwise, unless
yQu go in an airplane. The Editor
made the trip from the north bank
to the south and back in a boat
of Ken Browning. G. D. Shuttles-
worh was the other passenger. The
gauge at the level showed 100 feet.
The current was very strong and
the water was swif. There was a
large crowd at the levee when we
returned. They seemed relieved
that we had returned safety.
