INFLATION
One of the country’s leading
economic writers said the other
day that it looks very much as
if a yearly inflation of 2 per
cent has gotten to be “normal”
— that we can expect this much
cost and price increase from
here on. The Government does
not accept this view, we are
sure, and probably you don’t
either.
“Inflation” is a dirty word in
the farmer’s language. And it
hursts worst those who can’t af-
ford it. Sometimes it creeps so
slowly that you can hardly
notice it. Yet, you soon realize
that your dollar doesn’t go as
far as it once did. Then you
know what has happened.
As you frantically try to beat
inflation to the punch, you start
figuring ways to protect your
investments. You want to put
your money into such things as
stocks, land, and the like, which
will increase in value if prices
go up. Then you stop on that
word “if.” Suppose, you say,
prices don’t go up — maybe
even down. So, risks are involv-
ed — and yo ucan’t afford any
more risks than you already
have.
So you think back to such
sound things as life insurance,
savings accounts and deposits,
Savings Bonds. No risk here.
Both types of investments
have their place. Just be sure
yours are well balanced.
SHREWD MANAGEMENT
Diner Waitress: “Prices ?
Why, man, in this diner you can
get a shrimp cocktail, green tur-
tle soup, prime ribs of beef,
choice of two vegetables, salad,
coffee and dessert all for seven-
ty-five cents.”
Truck Driver: “How in the
devil can you afford to serve all
that for just seventy-five
cents?”
Waitress: “We use paper
plates.”
