In honor of the fiftieth wed-
ding anniversary of Mr. and
Mrs. John William (Bill) Gross,
their relatives invite their frien-
ds to a reception Sunday,
January 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. in
the Citrus Room at the Texan
Hotel, Pharr.
Mr. and Mrs. Randy Doffing
of San Juan are announcing
the arrival of a baby girl, Dee
Ann, born January 4, at 9:52
p.m. at the McAllen Gen. Hosp.
Paternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Matt Doffing of
San Juan, and maternal gran-
dparents are Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Hunt of Alice.
The United States Marine
Corps Recruiting Service “Cer-
tificate of Appreciation” was
recently presented to the
owner-publisher of The Pharr
Press.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Harnagel
of Alamo are announcing the
arrival of a 7 pound, 13 ounce
daughter, Esther Louise, born
Jan. 5, at 12:20 a.m. at the
Suderman Clinic, Pharr.
Pvt. and Mrs. William (Bill)
Hanshaw and young daughter,
Reagan Ann of Huntsville
Alabama, are here for a week’s
visit with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Herschel Hanshaw and
sisters and other relatives.

January 14,1955
There were a total of 17 gun
fatalities during the last hun-
ting season, the State Game
Commission reports.
Ten of the 17 hunting
fatalities involved teenagers,
all except one of 14 years or
under.
Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Holmes of
Cedar Rapid, Iowa, were
visitors last week in the home
of Mrs. Ed. Maule.
40 Years Ago
January 12,1945
Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Wilson
have finally received their first
note from her son, Lt. Gerald
Ricks, who was reported
missing on Oct. 13, 1944. He
wrote from a Prisoner of War
Camp in Germany that he was
well and for the family not to
worry about him.
Dr. and Mrs. D.A. Muller have
gone to Donna to make their
home at 429 S. 5th. Mr. and
Mrs. George Potts bought the
Muller home on W. Caffery.

The temperature in the Valley dipped down into the low 30’s with
freezing rain. Heavy ice built up caused many highways and
schools to close. Many trees suffered broken branches due to ice.

watch the colorful and skillful
dancing. This year’s callers will
be Jerry Haag from Tropic Star
Park, and Willy Hutchinson of
Donna. All square dancers are
invited and a cold drink will be
provided.
A bridge tournament will be
held January 14 and running for
five weeks. Francis Lang is the
chairperson, and Paradise Park
in Pharr is the host.
The Tennis Tournament, with
Eunice Kennedy of Tip-O-Texas
Park as chairperson will be
Saturday, Jan. 19 at the PSJA
School District’s High School
courts, corner of “I” Road and
Ridge Road beginning at 10 a.m.
The Pool Tournament, Phil,
Congdon chairperson, will be
Monday, Jan. 14 at Tropic Star
Park in Pharr. Registration is at
9 a.m. with the play beginning at
9:30 a.m.

United
The annual meeting of Church
Women United will be held
Friday, January 18, 1985 at the
First Christian Church, 1400
North 10th, McAllen, Texas,
beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The Pharr Garden Club met on
January 2nd at the Valley Gar-
den Center on Business 83 and
McColl Road. The program was
titled Australian Flowers and
Fauna and was given by Betty
Browne, who lecently returned
from a 28 day tour of Australia,
New Zealand and Fuji. The
program was very interesting
telling of the many different
trees, plants, flowers and
animals that are native to that
part of the world.
A Conservation Report on the
Santa Anna Wildlife Reserve
was given by Teresa Summy.
Bette Browne have the Hor-
ticulture Report explaining the
best days to plant various plants
during the month of January.
The Pharr Garden Club voted
to join the Native Plant Socity to
promote plants natural to this
area and not subject to damage
by a freeze.
The home of Amando O. Garza
of 1312 Ridgewood Circle, Pharr
was chosen as the Yard of the
Month and the award for
Business Yard of the month went
to the Pharr Fire Station.
The door prize, donated by
Lewis Nursery, Cage Blvd.,
Pharr, was won by Vivian John-
son. Refreshments were served
by Lorena Raines and Daisy
Drake.
The February 6th meeting of
the Garden Club will feature a
program on the Native Plants of
this area by Jim Everet. Guests
are welcome.
