McAllen Businessman

November 15,1973
A McAllen
businessman pays
a high tribute to the
Pharr Post Office.
He says he has got-
ten his mail in both
McAllen and
Mission and neither
compares to Pharr,
which he attributed
to the efficiency of
Miss Virginia Polk,
and her successor,
Bodford Hudspeth
and he caps it off
with the statement
that if Sen. Bentsen
and Congress Kika
de la Garza want to
find out how a good
P.O. works, they
should come and
make a pilot study
of Pharr.
Congr. De La Gar-
za was the featured
speaker at the an-
nual banquet at
which time the new
officers are of-
ficially recognized.
The Congressman
spoke on a number
of things, including
Watergate the talk
on impeachment of
the president, the
energy crises* cost
of food, war powers
of the president,
and other matters.
The PSJA school
trustees authorized
the Supt. Dean
Skiles, and the
assn’t Supt. Gus
Guerra, to go to
Dallas to confer
with Housing
Education and
Welfare Officials on
an ESAA grant, to
determine what
guidelines the
District will have to
meet and what
realigument of
students (if any) will
be necessary to
secure the funds.
Joe J. De Vries,
who has been In
business longer
than anyone in this
area, has sold his
meat market and
Slaughter house at
San Juan and is
retiring, friends all
over the Upper
Valley will regret to
know.
Mr. De Vries star-
ted in business 49
years ago.
Kim (McCharen)
Berry, student at
Pan American
University, Edin-
burg, was one of
the selected 36 up-
perclassmen for in-
clusion in the 1973-
74 edition of Who’s
Who among
students in
American Univer-
sities and Colleges.
Kim is a PSJA
graduate and
daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. R.N. Mc-
Charen of Pharr.
Mr. and Mrs. Juan
V. Rodriguez of
Pharr announce the
engagement and
approaching marri

graduate of PSJA

Miss Marva Joe
Martin, daughter of

Martin of Pharr, has
been selected as
“Miss Bearette” at
PSJA for 1963-64.

Bids on the new
$100,000 National
Guard Armory
building for Pharr
have been called
for December 16,
1953, by the State
Board of Control.
The Armory will
have about 10,000
square feet of floor
space and is
estimated to cost
about $100,000, but
the bids, of course,
may be higher, or
lower.
Santos Salinas 35,
a resident of Pharr
all of his life,
passed away Mon-
day Nov. 9th in
Brooks General
Hospital, San An-
tonio, after a long
illness.
Salinas was a
veteran of World
War II, having ser-
ved in the 461st Air
Force from 1942 to
1946.
He taught in theP-
SJA public Schools
until last yfear when
he was taken ilk He
was active in Pharr
civic affairs and
three years ago,
was a candidate for
city commissioner.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Loehr Jr. of New
Orleans are an-
nouncing the arrival
of a son Harry
Christain Loehr III.
