As was stated In Tim Gazkttk Satur
day Mrs Lou Max who was so horribly
burned at tho Hotel da Jouvrc died
nbont 10 oclock Saturday morning alter
suffering great agony Squlro Natico and
a jury of inquest viewed tlio remains and
heard testimony in regard to tlio matter
Tho verdict was that deccasod came to
her death from bums but that tho cause
of tho llro was unknown
Tho night of the accident It was thought
that tho coaloil lamp in tho room had
exploded and caused tho disaster and
Mr Max was so strongly of this opinion
that he stated It as a fact to a reporter of
Tub Gazbtth and others who wero on
the scene shortly after tho burning be
camo known
When tho reporter reached tlio
house his knock was answered
by tho proprieties who said
sho knew nothing about tho llro or how It
occurred and remarked that sho had
come over from her resldcnco which ad
joined to flud out about it Whllo staiid
lng nt the door a man camo into the hall
and gathered up a lot of broken glass
lying on the hall floor about tho door of
tho room lu which tho accident had oc-
curred and the proprietress remarked to
him throwthat In tho yard Thq smell
of oil was very apparent aud tho reporter
was satisfied tho broken glass was
tho remnants of tho lamp A
lamp was attcrward found how
ever In tho street half fllled
with oil and tho burner on An investi-
gation of lho womans room at tho tlmo
shooed that no la p was lu the roomaud
here tho smell of coal oil was plain Tlio
bed did not have the appearance ol being
occupied and had been deluged with
water
Under all tho circumstances tho affair
Is qtilio mysterious There arc dark ru-
mors that a woman was at the bottom of
it and that while Mrs Max was asleep
this woman whoever she may be had
with a handkerchief saturated Mrs
Maxs clothing with oil and In some-
way not explained managed to set llro
to tho victim at tho time of tho supposed
accident
Ono strange thing about the wholo
affair was that a second alter tho burn-
ing an old mattress or a pilo of old
clothes were burning In the street In
front of the house and no one know any-
thing about It Tho wholo thing Is under-
going a rigid lnv stlsation and the truth
will doubtless bo evolved

tbo fact
theargument for tbo defenso was
brongbt out lh ovldenco that all thq par
ties indicted had bid four conui per acre
on tho lands inclosed had had tho laqds
awarded them by tho surveyor had ten
dered tho moneyfor thorn to tho land
board and had kept up such tender year
ly It was argued thai Uiuy had complied
with tho law as they wcro allowed to do
soaud so the jury decided In some cases
however It is believed that tho fact of
an Incloaurc was not proven In an ornf
charge In one of tho cases tho judge said
that if tho jury boliuvtd the
lands had been awarded to th
defendants they boing tho highest
bidders nt 4 cents au acre tho minimum
fixed by law and they had made yearly
tender of tbo rental duo they should
bring In n verdict of not guilty Whcft
It Is remembered In cacti case of convic-
tion tho smallest ilno that could bo im-
posed under tho law was CO cents an acre
