Charleston and Lake Creek News
By Vicki Vasco
We have certainly been having
lovely weather in Delta County
lately, The Blue Bonnets and
Indian Paintbrushes are bloom-
ing beside the roads, and the
Irises are blooming. They are
beautiful. Saturday and Sun-
day were beautiful days. Lots
of things have been happen-
ing in Delta County, farmers
are working hard planting seed
getting ready for spring, and
gardeners are working hard in
their gardens and yards.
Brazos Phillips and Daw-
son Hamner and the Vaughns
caught a 50 pound catfish at the
Cooper Lake Friday evening.
There were lots of people in
Cooper Saturday for the Fair,
the old car show on the square,
the events taking place at the
park, and all around Cooper.
There was a livestock show
taking place at the rodeo arena.
People toured the old Cooper
High School. Several toured
the Patterson Museum. Several
told me they had been to Enloe
to the Clara Slough Museum
that day before coming to Coo-
per.
Katie Malone and her grand-
children toured the old Cooper
High School and purchased
some things. There was a ga-
rage sale going on there.
Katie, Grover Nabors, and
Shirley Smith worked at the
Patterson Museum that day.
We had lots of young people
working outside the Museum.
Sixty-five young people from
New Life Baptist, their Youth
Director and his wife, the
Rev. and Mrs. Lonnie Sand-
ers (both my former students)
worked on the grounds, clean-
ing and sprucing up. Mr. Har-
ry Patterson’s grandson (Bob
Hurst) and his son worked
outside in back of the Mu-
seum. We had lots of visitors
Saturday afternoon. Cliff and
Marla (Bettes) Harris came
and toured. Marla’s mother
Inez (Pickens) Bettes worked
at the Cannery during World
War II, Mr. Harry Patterson
gave her a quilt that his mother
had made. Marla still has the
quilt. She had brought pictures
of the quilt to show all of us.
It is beautiful. Dawson Ham-
ner and a little Houchins boy
cleaned up inside the Museum
where some cats had gotten in
and broken some things. Some
of the youth from New Life
were working at other places
around town. A Mrs. Reyn-
olds, who used to work at the
school, but has now retired,
toured the Museum. She said
that her father worked for Mr.
Patterson during World War II
at the cannery.
Ellis McGaha, Linda Bums
and Mary Wilson’s cousin
toured the Museum. He hadn’t
been there in several years.
The United Daughters of
the Confederacy met Friday,
April 12, at the Paris Public
Library. Debbie Stuart was the
speaker. She talked about one
of her relatives who was in the
Civil War, Simon Tilman, and
the battles in which he fought,
one of them being the Battle of
Stone River in Tenn., where he
was wounded. Mrs. Stuart was
also our hostess for the day.
She is a teacher in Dallas. Our
next meeting will be Friday,
May 10, at 11:30 at the Cozy
Cappucino in Paris. It will be
our spring luncheon. On Me-
morial Day at 10 o’clock in
the morning, we are planning
to place a wreath at the foot of
the Confederate Marker on the
south side of the Court House
in Paris.
The Worship Leader at the
Methodist Church Sunday was
DeeDee Mason, and the Chil-
dren’s Time Leader was Jennie
Pickering. Canon Ingram and
Billy Watson were the Candle
Lighters and Ushers.
The Northeast Texas Teach-
ers Federal Credit Union met
Tuesday evening, April 9 for
their annual meeting at the
Paris High School. They gave
away money as door prizes.
Pat Waters of Cooper was the
only person from Delta Coun-
ty to win anything.
Armeta Basham Sansing of
Roscoe, formerly of Pacio,
passed away Sunday after-
noon, April 14. She had been
transferred from Abilene to a
Lubbock hospital. Keep her
family in your prayers. Arme-
ta graduated from East Delta
High School.
My cousin, Sandy Mack
George of Longview, formerly
of Cooper, the son of the late
Andrew “Sandy” and Sybil
(Blessing) George, called one
day last week. We had a nice
long talk. He is doing great.
Rikki Jene Smith Cooper
and her family of Heath spent
the week end in the East End,
visiting Ricky and Patricia
Smith and taking in the events
in Cooper.
The East Delta Baptist Church
had their Revival last week.
The Rev. Mike Lawson of
Sherman’s First Baptist Church
was the preacher, and the Rev,
Jake Vaughn and the East Delta
Praise Group were in charge of
the music.
Wesley and Sarah Walker have
a little son they named Ronan
Liam Walker. He got here April
1, and weighed 9 pounds and
5 oz. He is 21 inches long.
Mr. and Mrs. John Barker are
the great grandparents. He is
their first great grandchild. Mr.
and Mrs. Curtis Walker are
his grandparents. He came to
Church at the East Delta Bap-
tist April 7.
Tanner Houchins is playing
baseball for the Cooper Bailers.
They have played two games
and won both—16 to 3 and 14
to 2.
Brazos Phillips got medals
in three events at the District
Track meet at Chi sum Monday
evening.
Tina Rainey told me that she is
retiring at the end of this school
year from Cooper I.S.D.
The Cooper City council met
Monday evening and declared
Tuesday, April 9 as National
Recognition Day of Service.
Several of the R.S.V.P. mem-
bers attended that meeting and
were recognized.
The Delta County Library
Board had their monthly meet-
ing Tuesday at the Library.
The Library had their month-
ly luncheon Wednesday. They
served King Ranch Chicken,
a green salad, and strawberry
shortcake. Heather Murray and
her students from Cooper High
School did an excellent job of
fixing and serving that meal.
Jan Lewis fixed the shortcake.
It was delicious too.
The Delta County Historical
Commission will meet Mon-
day, April 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the
Cooper Civic Center for their
next meeting. PK. Kirkpatrick
from Ladonia will be the guest
speaker. Come and join us.
Sarah Ann Nabors Packwood
of Waco spent some time last
week in Charleston with her
mother Susie Nabors.
Birthdays: Joumi Cate In-
gram 4/22; Anita Wingo 4/26;
and Sam Falls 4/27. Happy
birthday, folks! Have a good
week!

the First Baptist Church Pecan
Gap Sunday, April 21, 11:00
a.m. Bro. Bob Layman will
bring the message and Scott
Trussell, son of Bro. Reuben,
will help with the service. Bro.
Reuben and Carroll have been
a blessing to the church and
this community for the past 12
years and we are very fortunate
to have them here. Bro. Reu-
ben has been an ordained min-
ister for the past 50 years and
has pastored many churches.
Following the service, there
will be a luncheon at the Com-
munity Center to honor the
Trussells. Bring a vegetable
or salad (meats and sweets will
be provided) and join us in this
celebration.
Make your plans now to at-
tend the Antique Car Show and
Swap Meet which will be held
in Pecan Gap May 18^. Plan
on bringing your Antique vehi-
cles to show or trade. Plan on
some good home cooked “La-
dies Club” food at the Com-
munity Center or good fish at
the Fish Place, or good Dewey
Dogs. Contact Warner Cheney
903-227-5188 for vendor spac-
es for your antique vehicles.
Y’all come!
Tom and Virginia Collier
of Ladonia and Karen and Ed
Pickard were supper guest
at the Lois Amundson home
Wednesday night.
It was good to have Roy and
Anna Bolton from Tennessee
back in town this past week vis-
iting family and friends. Come
back soon!
Several birthdays were cele-

Mexican Restaurant Tuesday,
April 9. Attending the birthday
outing were Fredia Clark, Anna
Bolton, Toni Woodall, Wanda
White, Peggy Sandlin, Peggy

chairs. It was a good day.
There are three young ladies
in our community that we are
very proud of and they did
great at the Delta County Fair
in Cooper Saturday, April 13.
Caitlin Brown won a 1st and a
3rd place with her sheep, then
won 4*h overall with her pony.
Amelia Brown won a 2n^ and
3r^ place with her horse to win
3rd place over all. Gabrielle
Brown won a Is* and a 2n^

prised. Proud mother of these
girls is Tyree Rather Brown.
Way to go girls!
Randy, Mindy, and Joy Con-
ley traveled to Kansas this past
weekend to watch Carley Con-
ley play college baseball in 4
conference games. Carley’s
team took 4 wins and Carley
hit her first ever grand slam in
college baseball. Way to go
Carley!
Jack Kiley is home after being
in hospital in Sulphur Springs
and we wish him continued
improvement. Jack is to have
some surgery later when he is
improved. Gail Giddens is to
have surgery Tuesday, April
16^, and we wish her well.
Mary Stephens will possibly
have shoulder surgery soon.
Remember Wilbur Cornitius,
father of Wayne Cornitius, as he
has serious health problems. Pat
Giddens Grant is having breath-
ing problems and is now in the
Greenville hospital. Keep these
folks in your prayers.
Klondike News

Note to my readers: Please
accept my apologies for not
having the Klondike news this
week. I have laryngitis and can
speak only for short periods at
a time. Therefore I could not
make my usual calls on Sunday
afternoon. God willing, I will
be back on the job next week.
Talk to you then, so save your
news items.
However, I do want to
remind you of the fish fry for
the Klondike Volunteer Fire
Department next Saturday,
April 27. Service will begin
at 4:00 p.m. and will continue
until 9:00 p.m. - or until the

and $8.00 for children under
12. Plates include fish,
homemade French fries, cole
slaw, hushpuppies, a drink and

entertainment provided by the

the auction and for the dessert
table. For more information,
call Janet at 903-395-2107 or
