Is very protty rhetoric but not truth
Jay Gould has uo morb to do with grant

Associated Press Is simply an association
of newspaper men who havo combined
to simplify and cheapen tho work of

this country men havo all tho freedom

There arc men in Fort Worth as much re

iort Worth la entitled to distinction as
tlio hottest tempered town In Toxna 8ha

no disguising tho fact that tho sympathies of
thotlty nro and have been orcnthulmlngly
with tlio strikers It now appears that tlio
vrorllngmcn of tlio city tinvo concluded to ran
IU municipal nlfnfrs and havo elected a fnll
board ot nldormcn every ono of whom la a
Knight of labor
It Is a general Impression authorized
by news sent from this place that In the
city ulcctlon thero was a direst lssuo
between tho Knights of Labor and tho
opposing elements No such contest
was mado hero In somo of tho wards
two or moro members of that ordor ran
against each other ami In othor wards
men known to bo Inimical to thc Knlghts
ran against ouch other which would not
have been tho case had thcro boon a con
tost mado against Irlcnds and enemies of
tho Knights Dr Brolles tho mayor
elect Is friendly to tho Knights but is
notamombcrof tho order and the fact
that in the Third ward where tho Knights
aro strongest ho received only 268 votes
out ot 801 Is piotty good evidence that
ho was not especially tholr candidate
Undoubtedly a great many votes were
Influenced by a candidates known pre-
dilections for or against the Knights of
Labor but thero was no direct light
mado on this Issue and the result of tho
election has no significance ono way or
tho other
ACT AND TALK ItHASONABLY
Keasonablo pcoplo will try in vain to
justify tlio Knights of Labor of Denton In
tho Mow thoy take of the riot In this city
Starting out with the premise that thero
has been a disturbance at Fort Worth
between tho United States deputy mar-
shals and somo other parties they pro-
ceed to say that
Wo belle 0 tbo disturbers of tlio peace at
Fort Worth to bo nsontB ot Jny Gould and that
allthovlolcncn committed Is nt tholr Instlgi
tlou In order to lnuro tho canoe of labor
Who aro tho disturbers of tho pcaco
who aro believed to bo agontsof Jay
Gould Do they mean that tho strikers
who wore tho disturbers of tho peace aro
In Goulds employ and that they brought
on that conflict at his Instigation in order
to injure tho causo of labor That Is
evidently tho view they take of It
Leaving out of dlf cusslon tho fact that
tho men seen and recognized among tho
rioters and tho man Nacc who was shot
nnd afterward captured aro active
Knights of Labor who can entertain the
notion that these men H thoy had been
In Jay Goulds pajv would havo exposed
their lives to tho bullets of tho olllcers
for all the money at Goulds command
Men will do a great many mean things
for money but thoy will not put them-
selves In position to be killed for any
price However foolish or reckless the
assailants of tho olllcers may havo been
thoy could not havo but known that some
of them would bo hurt and 11 thoy es-
caped after killing and wounding tho
police that tho gibbet and tho peniten-
tiary would bo their portion
If tho Denton Knights of Labor would
avoid tho odium of tho outrage committed
by tho strikers at Fort Worth they must
takonnother line of action ivorybody
knows that tho assailants in that aflalr
wero members ot tho Knights of Labor
for thoy wero recognized and It Is too ab
surd to say that thoy w cro Goulds agents
seeking to bilng tho Knights order Into
disrepute The right way to do Is to
condemn tho outrage and pledge tbo
poWer of tho Knights to bring tho offend
crs to justice Instead of trying to shield
them That tho Knights of Labor as an
organization do not approvo of tho act
and aro not responsible for It Is n fact
too patent to demand assertion They
cannot bo loaded with tho infamy of the
conduct of somo of their members until
they approvo of or condone such conduct
Instead of making tho childish plea of the
Denton lodge let them tell tho truth dis-
avow all sympathy for such violence uso
their endeavors to bring tho guilty to
punishment and they will not bo unfairly
censured
GLADSTONES MEAT EFFORT
Premier Gladstones great speech that
has been looked for so long Is gtvon to
tho world It Is all that tho reputation
of Its author had led tho world to expect
Ho proposes a plan for tho settlement of
tho Irish question that the Irish them-
selves havo signified tholr acceptauco of
It only remalus for tho English parlla
raont to make a law of Mr Gladstones
proposition Will it do this
Tho best opinion Is that tt will not
Eugllsh stubbornnoss Is too strong to per-
mit tho change that snch concessions re-
quire To glvo homorule to Ireland will
Vo to make that pcoplo practically Inde-
pendent and tho Inveterate English proj
udlco Is opposed to Irish Independence
Even In tho house of commons tho Glad
stono schemo Is not assured ot thu solid
support of the Llboral party and In the
kouM of lords Its defeat Is looked upon
as certain Tho queen Is against It Tho
cabinet Is divided and atleast four mem
bers have declared their hostility to tho
scribes to his

Gladstone do
Ho can do what anybody can do what
tho strongest must do Ho can wait Ho
will triumph becauso justice nnd right
aro on his sldo No great reform has
ever been accomplished in a year when
tho British parliament was a party to Its
success but no great reform has failed
utterly when sustained by mi earnost
singlehearted persistant advocate Tho
present parliament may not grant tho
Irish peoplo what Mr Gladstono asks for
them but somo other parliament will
In tho mcantlrao tho Dngllsh champion
of Irish liberty may die Ho has already
passed far beyond mans allotted years
of life and cannot expect to livo many
more Death may tako him from his task
ero It Is accomplished But what of It
Tho glory will bo his It Is not tho man
who docs most but tho man who sets
others to doing that Is honored Glad-
stone living or dead will rightly claim
tho honor of giving a nation Its liberty
and no man can take away that honor
When ho asked parliament to mako suf-

tho opposition was greater than that
ngainst tho Irish bill But with unflag-
ging zeal ho porsovcrcd In hlspurposeand
ho won Commons lords queen all

of tho common people of England was
only n step toward his aim of giving Ire-
land a government of Its own From no
class could ho expect such support In
that work as from the common people of
England To make thorn agents in his
work ho endowed them with tho ballot
Being so lately mado their own political
masters thoy can the most keenly sym-
pathize with thoso who aro not yet

mier looks for helps and If he has not
misjudged human nature his appeal will
