The sudden death of O. G.
Stephenson Sunday evening came
as a shock to his many friends in
the Groom community. Steve,
who owned and operated the
local drug store had made a place
for himself in the hearts of local
people who always found him
ready to serve them, day or night,
in his capacity as ia pharmacist
when they needed prescriptions
filled. Steve was a good citizen,
a kind and devoted father, a
friend and counselor who will be
missed by many who had grown to
depend upon him when illness
visited their families.
The loss of a wheat crop from
drouth and late freezing weather
is partly being offset in the com-
munity by the opportunity to sow
a row crop following the good
rains of the past 10 days. Groom
again appears to be blessed with
more than its share of the mois-
ture being dumped in scattered
areas over the Panhandle-Plains
area.
Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub
Scouts, their,leaders, and interest-
ed citizens are promoting a Scout
Circus to be held Thursday, May
26th on the old football field near
the American Legion Hall. The
big event will start at 6 P.M. and
will last for about four hours.
Sideshows tand booths will sup-
plement the main event which will
be a show all should see.
A petition was signed by a large
number of local people and mailed
to the offices of the Southwestern
Public Service Co., in Amarillo
last week asking that the com-
pany continue its business office
in Groom. It had been learned
that the company was considering
closing of its office here in the
near future and consolidating the
local office with the office at
Panhandle. No one here would
expect the utility company to do
otherwise if it were a matter of
economic necessity hut it would
be regretable to lose the local
representation the office gives if
the move was unnecessary. The
Southwestern Public Service Co.,
has always maintained good pub-
lic relations in Groom, has. given
us good service, supported our
efforts to better our community,
and enjoys a high regard from the
customers here. We all hope the
company will decide to remain a
personal part of our local business
life. Mail order business in a
small town does not appeal to
those who are having a hard
struggle keeping * a community
prosperous and growing.
Sunday, May 29, is Sl/c Walter
E. Schneider’s birthday. Walter
is still in Korea. Let’s'remember
him with a birthday card. His
address is RA 5403 9725, 6th Med-
ical Depot (Army) APO 301, San
Francisco, Cal. Send it air mail
not later than May 20, if he is to
receive it on or before his birth-
day anniversary.
The Groom High School is turn-
ing out a large class of seniors
this year, twelve boys and eight
girls. Groom has every reason to
bd proud of its school system and
the students it graduates. A
glance at the records of past
graduates of Groom_ schools show
that the boys and girls' all make
honest, worthwhile citizens in any
community in which they make
their homes. Good teachers and
interested citizens make our
school system a success.
