Veterans Gift Box Being
Filled at Koetting Store
A ibox has been put in the win-
dow of Frank Koetting’s Store
for the purpose of collecting gifts
to go to the Amarillo Veterans
Hospital by November 1. Any
gift, with the exception of liquids,
is acceptable. The gifts are put
in the gift shop at the hospital
and the veteran patients select
from them gifts to send- home to
their families at Christmas time.
Remember that if it were not
for these gift shops many families,
kiddies, wives, mothers and dads,
would not receive some little love
gift from the veterans.
Let’s all help to make the
Christmas for our veterans’ fam-
ilies as merry and happy as pos-
sible. A little gift from you could
mean a great deal to someone..

Donations Needed For
USO Campaign Quota
Carson County had contrib-
uted $441.50 by Monday after-
noon in the annual United De-
fense Fund for the United
Service Organizations (USO)
according to David M. Warren,
Jr., of Panhandle, county cam-
paign chairman.
This campaign is being
waged to provide wholesome
recreational facilities for 141
Carson county men in military
service.
County goal is $870 and
Warren said the campaign is
being conducted largely by
mail.
Self-addressed, stamped re-
turn envelopes have been sent
to many Carson county resi-
dents. Persons not receiving
envelopes may mail contribu-
tions to Box 98, Panhandle.
Those not wishing to mail in
their gifts may leave them
with the State National Bank
in Groom, Farmers National
Bank in White Deer, or their
local Southwestern Public
Service Co., office and they
will be forwarded.
Groom donations Monday to-
taled $22, White Deer’s $2.50
and Panhandle’s $417. War-
ren said he hoped that all
parts of the county would sup-
port the boys in service by
helping the USO campaign.
Groom contributors are:
State National Bank, C. L.
Culver, Mrs. J. W. Knorpp,
J. B. Demic, W. S. Farley,
and Mrs. Mary Kuehler.

Voters Asked To Ballot In
Special Efection Tuesday
Qualified taxpaying voters of
Carson County will have an op-
punity to vote in a special elec-
tion called for Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The election was called by
the Commissioners Court of Car-
son County at a regular meet-
ing in September and the elec-
tion order has been posted and
published according to law.
The ballot will carry this
wording:
“FOR Adding an Assessor-
Collector of # Taxes to the List
of Authorized County Officials.”
Below it will be1 line headed
“Against” so that voters may
make their choice.
The new office will not be
created before Jan. 1, 1957,
should the taxpaying voters ap-
prove the proposal. Should the of-
fice be created candidates would
run in the 1956 primaries and be
candidates in the general election
in November, 1956.
For years the sheriff and tax
collector were in one office and
the office of tax assessor was a
separate one. That plan ended in
1934 when the office was combin-
ed in one group.
Carson county voted in favor of
the constitutional amendment to
permit the division of the office in
the general election in Nov. 1954.
Therefore the Commissioners
Court approved the election to
put the issue up to the voters in
a special election.
J. M. Britten will be presiding
judge at the election Tuesday and
polls will be* located at the Groom
Public . School building. Regular
election rules and hours will pre-
vail.

Tigers To Play Spearman
Lynx Here Friday Night
The Groom Tigers will meet the
Spearman Lynx on Tiger Field
Friday night in a conference foot-
ball game which starts at 7:30
o’clock. The Tigers, coached by
Doc Bates and Bill Clifton, are
victors in three, conference tilts
this season and have lost one,
the defeat being to the Gruver
Greyhounds at Gruver last Friday.
Spearman may be a team hard
to handle. Their record of wins
this season in conference play
is not impressive, however they
have lost four games by a small
score. Coached by Roy Penning-
ton for the first time this year,
the Lynx have been showing
plenty of spirit and will give the
Tigers a tough tilt.
The Tigers were rated in num-
ber four place last week in Class
B standings before their defeat by
Gruver, This week they occupy
ninth place among the ten top
teams, v
In District 1-B standings the
Tigers are in second place with
three wins and one loss in con-
ference play. Gruver is in first
place with a perfect record. Strat-
ford is third with a 4-2 score.
Claude stands fourth with a 3-2
record. Vega is fifth, 2-2. Dar-
rouzett is sixth, 2-2-1. Texline is
seventh, 1-4-1. Spearman is eighth,
1-4, and Sunray is ninth, 1-5.
The Tigers suffered a stunning
defeat last Friday at Gruver when
they lost to the favorites by a
score of 33-0 and were knocked
from the top ranks of conference
competition. The Tigers had an
open date the previous Friday but
evidently did not profit by being
out of action for a week. Gruver
scored one touchdown in the first
quarter and one in the second to
lead 13-0 at half time. In the
third quarter the Greyhounds
racked up two more touchdowns
and wound up the fourth quarter
with another tally.
Peewees Defeat White Deer
The Peewee football team of
the Groom grade school defeated
White Deer here last Thursday
night by a score of 13 to 12. The
Peewees wind up the season with
a game at Panhandle Thursday
night of this week.
