DONATIONS NEEDED
FOR USO CAMPAIGN
Carson county’s campaign to
raise $870 for the annual USO—
United Service Organizations—is
under way with David M. Warren,
Jr., of Panhandle, as chairman.
A campaign by mail and solicita-
tions from public organizations
and from business firms is being
conducted. Warren said that the
drive would be difficult, unless the
people became - interested. He
mentioned that the fact that the
United States is not in a Shooting
war has caused some people to
lose interest in providing recre-
ational facilities for Americans in
military service—more than three
million of them.
The Texas' quota is $640,000.
The USO operates 232 units, and
25 of these are overseas. Not to
be overlooked are 18 located right
here in the state of Texas.
Carson county has 141 men in
military service.
Contributions may foe mailed to
David Warren, Jr., at the First
National Bank at Panhandle, or
may be left for the USO fund at
the State National Bank of Groom
and the Farmers National Bank
at White Deer. Donations are de-
ductible for income tax purposes.

CHEST X-RAY CAMPAIGN
SLATED NEXT WEEK
The public is urged to cooperate
in the Carson county mass chest
x-ray campaign which will be
conducted next week. It will be
necessary for the county to aver-
age 500 x-rays- at Groom, Pan-
handle and Skellytown to have
the same number of places open
next year. Because of chest sur-
veys finding incipient tuberculosis,
heart, cancer and other ailments
the work is invaluable to partici-
pants. There is no charge for hav-
ing the* x-rays made. The loca-
tion of the x-ray equipment in
Groom will be the City Hall from
1 to 6 P.M. Friday, Nov 4.
Skellytown x-rays will be taken
at the school building Thursday,
Nov. 3, from 1 to 6 P.M.
X-rays will be made at the of-
fice of the Southwestern Public
Service Co., at Panhandle on Mon-
day, Nov. 7, from 1 to 6 P.M.
White Deer citizens are asked
to have- their x-rays made at any
of the three stations.
GROOM RIGHT OF WAY FOR
HIGHWAY 66 IS SECURED
The City of Groom has about
completed it project of securing
the necessary additional right of
way through the city limits for
the widening of Highway 66 into
a four-lane highway. Most of the
right of way on the south side of
the road was furnished by the
Rock Island Railroad. On the
north side of the road -bed the
necessary 10 feet additional right
of way was purchased by the city
from property owners.
According to Mayor C. L. Culver
negotions have been completed
with the exception of settlement
with the Assembly of God church
denomination which has church
property adjoining the highway
three blocks west of Main Street.
Negotiations with the church
managers are underway and will
foe completed soon, the mayor said.
WATCH OUT FOR THE
HALLOWEEN GHOSTS
The witches ride on Halloween,
and far too often death rides with
them! Each year many youngsters
meet death or serious injury as
they gaily roam the streets dress-
ed in Halloween costumes. In
the excitement .of tricks or treats
and other Halloween fun, young-
sters forget about traffic danger.
Safety rules practiced at other
times go by the board.
This is especially dangerous
