St. John *8 to celebrate
Halloween with carnival
St. John's Religious Education
Program invites everyone out for
its annual Halloween Carnival.
There will be fun, and good food
aplenty on Saturday, (Jet. 31 from
3 to 6 p.m. on the church grounds.

Formann pleads
innocent to charges
Art Formann, of Medina County
pleaded innocent during arraignment
proceedings in Dallas last week.
Formann, 58, was indicted re-
cently by a grand jury in connection
with a four-year investigation of
condominium construction on the
shores of Lake Ray Hubbard.
A real estate appraiser, Formann
was charged with conspiracy and
fraud along with six other men.

cakes; 3rd, 4th, 5th grades, 2 dozen
cookies; 6th, 7th, 8th grades, one
dozen pieces homemade candy; and
9th through 12th grades, one cake
per student.
Three vehicle accident
injures one at 90 and 173 Thurs.
A three-vehicle accident on the
east side of Hondo Thursday sent a
Commanche, Texas woman to the
local hospital with minor injuries.
Sotera Escabar, 19, a passenger in
the automobile was taken to Me-
dina Community Hospital suffering
from bruises and minor cuts.
The accident happened shortly be-
fore 8 p.m. at the intersection of
Highways 90 and 173 and involved
an 18-wheeler, a 1975 Oldsmobile
and a 1976 Chevrolet pickup.
The initial collision occurred as
Roberto Escabar of Sonora. Texas
traveled east on 90 in the 18-
wheeler and 23-year-old Omar
Romero of Commanche, Texas, tra-
veled south on 173.
A failure to yield right-of-way set
off the accident, according ot DPS
Trooper W.C. Burger.
"The Oldsmobile failed to yield
the right-of-way to the 18-wheeler,"
said Burger. "After the initial
collision between those two
vehicles, the third vehicle hit the
rear of the trailer."
The driver of the pickup, 43-year
old Ernesto Garcia, of San Antonio,
was not injured.

Ann Michelle Faseler of Hondo
and Michael Gale Long of Medina
have been accepted as new students
at Howard Payne University and are
underway with classes for the fall
semester.
"As the year unfolds, it is evident
that the new students are an excep-
tional group," said Don Jackson,
HPU registrar. "They are enthu-
siastic and are going to help bring
Howard Payne a great new year."
New students help account for a
30 percent increase in enrollment at
HPU over the past two years. This
year, enrollment peaked at 1,105
students registered for degree credit
enrollment, up 12.75 percent from
similar figures last year.
Game hunting
applications now being
accepted at Bear Creek
Applications for game hunting at
Bear Creek Scout Reservation near
Hunt are now being distributed and
accepted for the Nov. 14 through
Jan. 3 hunting season.
Anyone interested in more infor-
mation or obtaining an application
may call the Scout office in San
Antonio, 341-8611, or Harold
Bryant at 426-2521.
Howard Payne is a liberal arts
university owned by the Baptist
General Convention and is located
in Brownwood.
Miss Faseler, a 1982 graduate of
Hondo High School, is a freshman
at HPU. She is the daughter of
Mrs. Melissa A. Jouett of Hondo.
Long is a 1983 Hondo High
School graduate. Also a freshman,
he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gale
R. Long of Medina.
Family Life Center
hosts open house
As this is Domestic Violence
Awareness Month, The Medina
County Family Life Center would
like to extend an open invitation to
the public to attend an Open House
on Oct. 25, 1987 from 2-4 p.m.
Prizes will be available for the
poster contest at this time.
Refreshments will be served.
Devine man
killed in collision
A 42-year-old Devine man was
killed early Friday morning when
the Ford Granada he was driving
was struck by a Southern Pacific
train near Devine.
The accident occurred just north
of Devine off Colonial Parkway, as
construction worker Juan Ortiz was
en route to San Antonio.
According to DPS Trooper Joe
Cerney, the car was struck by the
train's cattle guard and pushed more
than 100 yards along the track.
Ortiz was pronounced dead at the
scene.
