C of C planning membership mixer
A wine and cheese party is plan-
ned for Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.
at St. John's Parish Hall by the
Chamber of Commerce Board of Di-
rectors. Carol Long of Gill Savings
and Bonnie Moos of Hondo Realty
will act as hostesses for the event
which will be co-sponsored by
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.,
a constant supporter of chamber
activities.

members how much we appreciate

Chelsea Lynn Hellen
Chelsea Lynn Hellen made her
grand arrival at 12:35 a.m. Oct. 6,
1987, at Methodist Hospital in San
Antonio. She weighed seven
pounds, 14 ounces and measured 21
inches long.
She is welcomed by her parents,
I^eigh and Cindy Hellen of Castro-
ville.
Chelsea's maternal grandparents
are Tex and Betty Aulds and pater-
nal grandparents are Bill and Elva
Hellen, all of Hondo.
Paternal great-grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Hellen
and Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Wedg-
worth, all of Hebbronville. Ma-
ternal great-grandmother is Janice

Mendoza
Michael and Sandra Mendoza are
proud to announce the arrival of
their first child, a daughter,
Mercedes Alesaundra on Tuesday,
Oct. 13, 1987 at 7:15 p.m. at On-
slow Memorial Hospital in Jack-
sonville, NC. She weighed nine
pounds, one ounce and measured 21-
1/2 inches long.
Grandparents are Patricio and
Oralia Salazar, Antonio Mendoza
and Margaret Mendoza, all of
Hondo.

The Texas Educational Assess-
ment of Minimum Skills
(TEAMS) exit level exam will be
administered in Hondo on Tuesday,
Oct. 27 and Wednesday, Oct. 28,
1987 to all 11th grade students and
to those 12th grade students who
have not yet demonstrated mastery.
In addition, out of school exami-
nees will also be eligible for test-
ing. The test will be given in the
Moos. "This event will be to show
our appreciation to -our long-time
members, to welcome new mem-
bers, and to let other interested per-
sons know what the chamber has
been doing these days."
Wine, cheese, coffee, punch and
fruit will be served in an informal
setting. All chamber members are
encouraged to attend and meet their
friends and be introduced to the new
business owners and managers in
our community. Individuals inter-
ested in the chamber's activities
Colton Ryan McCulloch
Shaun and Tyler McCulloch are
proud to announce the arrival of
their new brother, Colton Ryan,
weighing seven pounds, 13 ounces
and 20 inches long. He was bom
Oct. 7, 1987 at the Methodist
Hospital.
Proud parents are Lou and Linda
McCullough of Devine.

The "Great Pumpkin Carve Out"
will be held at four San Antonio
area farmers markets beginning on
Wednesday, Oct. 28, through Satur-
day, Oct. 31, announced Marketing
Specialist Renee Watson of the
Texas Department of Agriculture.
The first pumpkin carving event
will be held at the Westlakes Mer-
cado Mall Farmers Market, located
at Marbach and IH Loop 410 at 8
a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28. On
Thursday, Oct. 30, the Olmos
Basin Park Farmers Market Carve-
Out will be held at 4 p.m.
Pumpkin carving events, beginn-
ing at 8 a.m., also will be held at
the Converse City Park in down-
town Converse and at the Texas
Bank market, located 403 South-
west W.W. White Road at Houston
Street, on Friday and Saturday,
respectively.
"These events are not only a fun
way to celebrate Halloween, but
High School Library and audio-
visual rooms. The test will begin at
9 a.m. All nonexempt students
must have mastered both sections
in order to receive high school
diplomas.
The exit level TEAMS exams,
mandated by H. B. 72, is given
twice a year so that students have
the opportunity to take the exam
should also plan to attend.
"Of course, we are not calling
this a Membership Mixer for noth-
ing," said Carol Long. "We hope to
encourage non-members to join our
organization. The chamber is the
only organization that constantly
promotes Hondo; Hondo events,
Hondo organizations, Hondo life-
style, and acts as a public relations
firm for all of us."

Carlie Rae Westbrook
Marc and Dana Westbrook are
proud to announce the arrival of
their daughter, Carlie Rae. She
arrived on October 9, 1987 at
Humana Hospital in College Sta-
tion at 1:04 a.m. Carlie weighed
seven pounds, two ounces and mea-
sured 20-1/2 inches long.
Her grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Currlin of Seguin and
Mr. Damon Westbrookof Hondo.
Great-grandparents are Mrs. Alice
Bruce Currlin of Houston and Mrs.
George Hugman of Boeme.

be given at each market site,
Watson said, adding that candles and
candy will be given to children
attending the pumpkin carving.
Pumpkins, which go on sale
starting, Wednesday, Oct. 21, will
sell for as little as $2, depending on
the size, Watson said. Pumpkin
cutters designed especially for use
by children also will be on sale for
75 cents each.

Esquibel
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class
Paul A. Esquibel, son of Gustino
and Martha Esquibel of Devine, re-
cently completed the Tacintel Sys-
tem Operator Course.
During the five-week course, con-
ducted at Naval Technical Training
Center Corry Station, Pensacola,
FL, Esquibel was provided with the
knowledge and skills necessary to
operate theTactical Intelligence sub-
system of the Fleet Satellite'Com-
munications System as well as con-
ventional shipboard communica-
tions sytems.
A 1975 graduate of Devine High
School, he joined the Navy in
October 1976.
Alvarez
Pvt. Celestino Alvarez, son of
Carlos and Alberta Alvarez of
Hondo, has completed the basic
field artillery cannoneer course
under the one station unit training
(OSUT) program at Fort Sill, Okla.
During the course, students were
taught the duties of a howitzer or
gun crewman. They also received in-
struction in communications, main-
tenance and the handling of ammuni-
tion and explosives.
OSUT is a program that com-
bines basic training with advanced
individual training.
He is a 1987 graduate of Hondo
High School.
West
Staff Sgt. Louis A. West has
graduated from the Air Force non-
commissioned officer leadership
school.
The sergeant studied techniques of
leadership, management and super-
vision.
He is a standard installation prac-
tices training instructor with the
1827th Electronic Installation Squa-
dron Kelly Air Force Base, Texas.
M.C. Extension
Fall Luncheon
scheduled
The annual Medina County Ex-
tension Fall Luncheon will be held
Tuesday, Oct. 27, at St. Joseph's
Parish Hall in Devine. Dr. Jerry
Parsons, the noted Texas Agricul-
tural Extension Vegetable Special-
ist, will present the program.
Everyone is invited to the special
luncheon. Serving will begin at
11:30 a.m. with the program sche-
duled at 12:30. Tickets will be avail-
able at the door for $3.50.

Wesley Scott has declared his in-
tentions to run for the office of
Sheriff of Medina County with the
following statement:
"I, Wesley Scott do hereby an-
nouce my candidacy for the Office
of Sheriff of Medina County.
"I am 40 years old and have 17
years experience in law enforcement
with the Texas Department of Pub-
lic Safety.
"I served in the U S Army in
1967-69 and received an Honorable
Discharge. In 19701 graduated from
the DPS Academy which involved
over 800 hours of police training.
In September of 1970 I was sta-
tioned in Hondo and have spent my
entire career working in Medina
County. I have worked closely with
the county sheriffs office, city
police departments throughout the
county, and the law enforcement
agencies of surrounding counties.
"I have served as Training Officer
and Senior Trooper for several pro-
bationary Troopers using my ex-
perience and training to develop ef-
fective and productive peace offi
cers.
"I have attended many 40 hours
In-service Training Schools to keep
abreast of the ever-changing laws in
Texas and recently completed a
three-week Accident Reconstruction
School. I have also completed 39
semester hours at Southwest Texas
Junior College toward a Criminal*
Justice Degree. I hold a permanent
license as a Peace Officer and an Ad-
