D’Hanis State Bank

Many members of the Catholic
church in the local area joined
thousands of people in a pilgrim-
mage last Sunday to welcome the
church's highest official to San
Antonio.
'Mandy Wolff of D'Hanis,
daughter of Ray and Dottie Wolff,
was selected to greet Pope John
Paul II with flowers at Kelly Air
Force Base.
Fannie Ibarra and Milton Renken
of Hondo were servers at the papal
Mass on Sunday morning.
Sgt. Domingo Gauna of Hondo
was one of many Army and other
volunteers who helped with first aid
and security.

unable to establish all the names of
those who attended, some of the

Jones, Mrs. Bobbie Christopher,

In 1982, the D’Hanis State Bank
was rated by a national banking
rating service as the 34th strongest
bank in all the United States, today
it ranks 18th.
In celebration of the bank's stand-
ing five years ago, certain of the
stockholders gave a dinner for J.P.
Ephraim, who for many many years
as president of the bank guided the
bank through good times and bad to
achieve such strength. Ephraim and
his philosophy were virtually
unique in modem banking which
has become a computerized, push-
button, impersonal business.
Today, with changes in the
national economy, and "de-regula-
tion" of banking and its detriment
to the banking system as a whole,
the D'Hanis State Bank is now rated
as the 18th strongest bank in the
United States and is the number one
bank in capitol strength in the State
of Texas.
The bank and its officers feel that
it is time to re-establish the per-
sonal relationship, the understand-
ing and the trust between borrower
and lender that had existed in
banking before de-regulation, the
computer age and lending-on-a-
purely-statistical-basis became the
norm.
Bankers need to keep ever before
them, that a loan that may be
routine to them may be a lifetime

Cemetery fund
needs donations
The City of Hondo has estab-
lished a Perpetual Care Cemetery
Fund for the local cemeteries, and
the help of area residents and
cemetery lot owners is still needed
to make the fund operate.
A contribution of $75 per
gravesite is being asked by the city
to continue perpetual care.
Owners who haven't already made
a contribution are asked to please
do so. The fund still needs over
$200,000 so that the project can
support and maintain itself.
If you have any questions
concerning this, please call or come
by City Hall.
Memorial donations honoring
those who are deceased are also
gratefully accepted.
The fund currently stands at ap-
proximately $60,000.
Quilt guild
meeting held
The Medina County Quilt Guild
held it's September meeting at the
Natalia Baptist Fellowship Hall
with 59 members and guests
present.

made cookies were served by the
Hondo hostesses.
Madelyn Van De Walle,
chairman, conducted the business
meeting. The bus trip to the
Houston Quilt Show on October 29
was discussed. Members who are
interested in riding die bus should
contact Mary Semlinger, Star Rt,
Box 3AB, Castroville, Texas
78009.
Many beautiful handmade items
were shown during "Show and
Tell."
A very interesting program of
Crayon Stenciling was presented by
Fanstina Sharp and Florence
Hoffman. Beautiful quilts, vests,
wall hangings and other pieces were

To achieve this goal, the D'Hanis
State Bank has taken steps to have
an available professionally oriented
staff experienced, senior bankers
who are to aid its customers in their
planning, growth and financing pro-
grams.
The Board of Directors of the
bank have announced the election of
Sam Moss as director and vice-
president for agricultural and com-
mercial lending and the election of
Charles Finger as a director of the
bank.
Moss has been a career banker
serving in many capacities from
teller to president in Medina
County, over a period of 32 years.

The directors of the bank are deter-
mined that this bank will take the
lead in affording its customers and
the public in the area a return to
"old time personal banking." They
intend to avoid at all costs current
automated, push-button, computer;
operated credit and lending services.
It is felt that the election of Sam
Moss and the participation of
Charles Finger and their knowledge
of the area and its economy will
afford personalized economic oppor-
tunity to the people of the D'Hanis
area and to all of Medina County.
