During Texas A&M University's
1987 summer commencement exer-
cises held Saturday, Aug. 15,
Yvette S. Garza of Castroville was
awarded a bachelor’s degree in his-
tory. A total of 1,545 degrees were
awarded, including 1,099 bachelor’s,
324 master’s and 122 doctorates.
Traveling to College Station to
see Yvette receive her degree were
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francisco
Garza, and her brothers, Duane and
Glenn Garza, all of Castroville; her
aunt, Mrs. Christina Castro of
Helotes; aunt, Mrs. Janie Daylong
of Castroville; and her aunt and
uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Algesivba of San Antonio; her
fiance Derek Schaefer and Derek's
parents, all from San Antonio.
After her graduation, Yvette was
honored with a party at the home of
her parents. Family and friends join-
ed in wishing her success in the
future and were served a barbecue
supper on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Yvette, who is a graduate of Me-
dina Valley High School, is con-
tinuing undergraduate studies at
Texas A&M University so she will
be able to teach subjects other than
history.
Duane Garza is attending South-
west Texas State University in San
Marcos working toward a degree in
business. The Medina Valley High
School graduate is the son of Fran-
cisco and Stella Garza of Castro-
ville.
Heather Johnson who is a fresh-
man at Medina Valley High School
had surgery on both knees on Aug.
27 and is having to take it easy for
a while. This is very difficult for
the energetic young lady especially
since she's a junior varsity cheer-
leader and has to watch the cheering
from the sidelines. Surgery was
done at Humana Hospital in San
Antonio where Heather works dur-
ing the summer months. Being
well-known at the hospital, she re-
ceived an autographed stuffed dog
from the nursing staff. Heather is
now receiving therapy in hopes it
won't be long until she is back in
the swing of things. Her parents are
Neil Johnson and Linda Johnson.
Her grandparents are the Albert
Becks of Rio Medina and the Henry
Johnsons of Kingsville.
Trinket Keller, branch manager
for San Antonio Savings Asso-
ciation at Castroville, is serving as
chairman of the Brisket Cook-off at
the Medina County Fair again this
year. Cookoff begins early Saturday
morning with judging at 2 p.m. En-
tries are invited and welcome.
Friends and relatives are pleased
to learn that Tina Rihn has been
moved Lom the intensive care unit
to a private room at Southeast Bap-
tist Hospital in San Antonio. Mr.
and Mrs. Alfred Kauffmann accom-
panied Pearlie Biediger to San An-
tonio where she will remain with
the Martin Tschirhart family to be
nearer her sister in the hospital. The
family is requesting friends hold off
visiting the patient until a later
time and until doctors give their
o.k.
Mangold Still Hospitalized
As of Monday afternoon, David
Mangold was still in Hermann's
Hospital in Houston but may be
dismissed later this week, according
to his father Sylvan Mangold of La
Coste.
David, a tight end for the Rice
Owls, was injured during a practice
session. He underwent surgery on
his knee on Aug. 27. After surgery,
he came down with a staph infec-
tion while in the hospital and a
second surgery was required to flush
out bacteria. He has been running a
temperature for 2-1/2 weeks, accord-
ing to reports.
David's mother, Virginia, has
been staying with him since he was
first hospitalized. Here's hoping he
will be able to leave the hospital
and that his knee will be back to
normal very soon.
Among those attending the Papal
Mass on Potranco Road on Sunday
were Vivian Beck, Fred and Mary
Lee Jungman, Matt and Wilfrene
Saathoff and Margie Haby. Prob-
ably one of the oldest persons in
attendance was Mrs. Elvie Stein of
Rio Medina who is 95. I know
there were many more from our area
whose names I was unable to get.
The delicious ham dinner is back!
Yes, on Sunday, October 4, Zion
Lutheran Church, Castroville, will
hold a ham dinner with serving to
begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue
until 2 p.m.
Advance meal tickets may be pur-
chased from any church member.
The price of the ticket includes the
drinks and dessert Advance tickets
are not necessary but will help esti-
mate the amount of food to be pre-
pared.
It’s a perfect time to begin your
Christmas shopping at the fancy
work booth. Baked items will also
be on sale. For the youngsters, the
fish pond will offer many surprises.
Mark your calendar and make
plans now to attend the dinner
which was a popular event some
years ago and is now being revived
by the church.

Catholic Life
Honors Lutzes
Francis Lutz and his wife, Helen
of Castroville were recently honored
by Catholic Life Insurance. They
were presented a plaque while attend-
ing the annual sales meeting in Vic-
toria.
Lutz, a Catholic Life represent-
ative since 1964, received the
"Twelve Apostle" Award for out-
standing servince in 1986. This is
the eighth time in his 24 year asso-
ciation with the organization that
he has earned this award.
Francis is one of 250 representa-
tives who produced over $158 mil-
lion in life insurance and annuity
sales last year.
Francis and Helen have three
children: Nathan who lives in San
Antonio, and Nadine (Lutz) Kempf
dhd Marcy Lutz, both of Castro-
ville.
Congratulations to the Lutzes!
tation to travel from one to the
other. He will also continue to
study English at San Antonio
College several days a week. Father
served St. Louis Parish for almost a
year and it is hoped there will be a
favorable turnout.
CCD classes will begin Sunday,
Sept. 20, in St. Louis Parish.
Classes begin at 9:10 a.m. and last
until 10:20 a.m. All children are
asked to meet in front of Naegelin
Hall at 9 a.m. so classrooms and
teachers can be assigned. Parents are
urged to have their children present
for the first day of classes.
Mrs. Ervin Bourquin, Mrs. Aline
Haby and Mrs. Bea Stinson were
among those attending a baby show-
er honoring Mrs. Bourquin's grand-
daughter, Connie Grissom, at De-
vine. The shower was held Satur-
day, Sept. 12, at Diner's Depot.
The hostesses presented the mother-
to-be with a basket of baby items
for the upcoming addition to the
Grissom family.
Booty and Doris Keller spent last
week vacationing at their place on
Medina Lake. On Wednesday even-
ing they hosted a supper for Mr.
and Mrs. Armin Boehme and Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Stein. Ham salad
and cheese salad sandwiches, maca-
roni salad, chips, olives, cake, pie
and drinks were served.
On Friday evening, the Kellers
had as their guests Joe and Marie
Marchiori from Macdona. The four-
some dined out at Adolph's Restaur-
ant in Lakehills.
Marie Marchiori is serving as
chairman of hte crafts booth for the
Queen of Heaven Church Festival
to be held Sunday, October 4. She
has been busy making items for the
booth which always attracts lots of
visitors. Serving of the barbecue
beef dinner will get underway at
11:30 a.m. There's entertainment
for young and old during the after-
noon, plus a big giveaway of prizes
to climax the big day.
EMT's at Papal Mass
Working the Papal Mass on Sun-
day, Sept. 13, were three EMT's
from the Medina Valley EMS.
They were Sherry Davis, Deanna
Gonzales and Joyce Sauter. Sherry
stated that emergency services ran
smoothly, with the biggest prob-
lem being heat exhaustion. She re-
ported when a victim would get ill,
the EMT treated them on the spot
then ran an orange flag up the flag-
pole for litter bearers to carry them
to the main first aid station.
I am pleased to report Alice
Burell of Castroville is doing well
after being a bit under the weather.
She was hospitalized for several
days but is getting back in the
routine of things at this writing. I
join her many friends in wishing
her good health.
Many various jobs were per-
formed by people at the Papal Mass
site on Sunday, and Terry Hersum
had a job that kept him busy most
of the time. He drove a shuttle bus
and hardly had time to see what was
happening at the altar, much less
take a picture with the camera he
was carrying. Terry who is the son-
in-law of Satch and Vivian Beck of
Rio Medina, was driving a North-
side ISD bus.
Now working in the big city of
Houston is Clare Rihn who is em-
ployed by Adplex and was recently
transferred to Houston from San An-
tonio. Clare is the daughter of
Maurice and Connie Rihn of Castro-
ville. Her grandparents are the
Ralph (Blackie) Tschirharts of Cas-
troville.
Leon Jr., Cathy and Jason
Tschirhart spent several days at the
Tschirhart place on Medina Lake
while Cathy enjoyed a week's vaca-
tion from her job at San Antonio
Savings Association in Castroville.
A Great Big Thank You
A great big "Thank You” goes to
Viola Dugosh for a job well done
serving as secretary for 11 years for
seven presidents for the Mico Vol-
unteer Fire Department. She served
faithfully many times under diffi-
cult conditions and did a good job.
The Matt Dugoshes have lived in
Mico for 26 years, but had been
coming out to Mico since 1934.
She resigned her job as secretary
to Mico VFD for health reasons,
but remains active. Thanks, Toots!
