Satch Makes Headlines
There was a record turnout at the elec-
tion poll in Rio Medina on Tuesday,
Nov. 3, with 223 ballots being cast.
There were 198 votes for pari-mutuel
betting and 25 against.
Rio Medina is the home of two ex-
jockeys, Albert (Satch) Beck and his
brother, Claude (Pete) Beck who is
deceased.
Satch was "front-page" news in the
San Antonio Express News two days
after the election. His picture appeared,
along with a story of his racing days at
tracks such as San Antonio's own
Alamo Downs, which is only a mem-
ory to many who frequented the track in
the 1930's. A business center has been
built where the race track was once
located. Right now it looks like Satch's
dream will finally come true. San An-
tonio may have a race track sooner than
we think. If so, Texans won't have to
leave their state to see the ponies run, it
will be in our own back yard, providing
jobs and keeping the Texas money at
home, and in the long run helping the
sagging economy.
Laurie Haby Honored
Turning 21 is an important day in
one's life and for Laurie Haby, Wednes-
day, Nov. 4, was the magic time in her
life.
Kenneth and Kathleen Haby honored
their daughter with a birthday party and
supper on Sunday, Nov. 1. Held at the
Haby home, the evening featured a meal
of fajitas and all the trimmings for
family and friends, with everyone hav-
ing a super time.
A graduate of Medina Valley High
School, Laurie is presently attending
the University of Texas at San Antonio
working toward a degree in accounting
and business computer. Laurie also is a
part-time employee at Community Na-
tional Bank in Castroville. Her proud
grandmother is Mrs. Ariel Haby of San
Antonio.

Program On Wreath Making
A program on wreath making was
given Monday, Nov. 2, at the Baptist
Church in Natalia. The demonstrations
were given between 10 a m. and 2 p.m.
Sponsored by Texas Extension Home-
makers Association, the session featured
wreaths for all seasons and all
occasions.
Betty Gilliam conducted the meeting
and introduced those participating in the
program.
Florence Hoffmann demonstrated how
4n all-fuson muslin wreath could be
ohanged by adding a different corsage
each month. The art of bow making
was explained by Florence Hoffmann
and Betty St. Leger.
Margie Haby brought and exhibited a
wreath she had cut from wood.
Dolls and wreaths made from com
shucks were shown by Kathy
Karsadden, who also demonstrated how
they were made.
An assortment of wreaths including
grapevine, satin and straw in a variety
of sizes were shown by Evelyn
Herrmann.
A sack lunch was enjoyed at noon.
Those attending from Rio Medina and
Castroville were Margie Haby, Nancy
Mangold, Jean Haby, Florence Hoff-
mann, Gladys Zinsmeyer and Charlene
Snavely.
Janna Haby, who fractured her leg re-
cently, is doing very well at this
writing. When Janna fell on the merry-
go-gound at school, her mother Patti
took her to Dr. Patricia Chandler's
office in Castroville where a splint was
placed on her leg. Dr. Chandler sent her
to San Antonio where, the following
day, a hard cast was applied.
I'm quite sure Janna is looking for-
ward to the day she'll be "free" of her
cast for good. But, even the uncomfor-
table cast didn't keep the energetic
youngster from trick-or-treating on
Halloween night. Dressed as a pump-
kin, she made her way around the
neighborhood with her friends.
Jacob Rogiers Has
First Birthday
On Monday, Nov. 2, Jacob Rogiers
was one year old. His parents, Scott and
Laurie Rogiers, hosted a big party in
his honor the day prior to his birthday.
As guests drove to the gate at the
Rogiers home near-Rio Medina, they
knew they had arrived when they saw
the colorful crepe paper streamers and
high flying balloons that spelled "party
time."
Fifty aunts, uncles, cousins and
friends brought gifts and good wishes
for little Jacob whose eyes lit up with
all the toys he received.
A barbecue dinner with all the
trimmings was served. Jacob's chocolate
cake was decorated with a Teddy Bear
and balloons.
Among those helping him celebrate
the happy day were Jacob's maternal
grandparents, Alma and Arthur Haby Sr.
of Rio Medina.
Afternoon Get-together
Honors Clementine Mechler
Katherine Czaja's home on Potranco
Road was the scene of a get-together re-
cently with Clementine Mechler as
honoree.
Happy Birthday wishes were extended
at the party held from 1 to 3 p.m. Deli-
cious pies were enjoyed by guests.
Those sharing Clementine's day were
her sisters, Kathleen Mechler, Annie
Haegelin, Genny Tschirhart, and sister-
in-law Katie Grossenbacher. Also pre-
sent were Sharyn Mechler, Mary Ander-
son, Eloise Bippert, Delane Bruce and
daughter Krysten, Lisa Ellison and son
Matthew, and Karen Czaja.
Alidor and Evelyn Thienpont and

Evelyn was first place winner in the
women’s division and also won a door
prize.

Cindy Stein has been quite busy
lately and has completed two more
phases as a student of Dive World in
San Antonio. She has done research and
recovery and night diver's specialty, and
is now into deep diver's specialty, equip-
ment and rescue diving.
On Halloween night, approximately
100 new Dive World students partici-
pated in an underwater party at Medina
Lake. The bottom of the lake was deco-
rated to resemble a haunted house and an
old car in the lake even had a skeleton
in the drriver's seat. There was a pump-
kin hunt with prizes for the winners.
Divers also searched for hidden golf
balls, and Cindy came up a prize winner
in that search.
Cindy reports 8-year-old son, Jason,
is now enrolled in a snorkeling class.
Jason is a third grade student at Medina
Valley School. Cindy's husband, James,
is anxiously awaiting the next outing
for his wife and his son Jason. Jason's
grandparents are Alidor and Evelyn
Thienpont and Alton and Theresa Stein,

Schott who hosted the Noisy Dozen
Bunco Club gathering. Prize winners

Dunlay. The group was checking out
property in the slri areas near Angel Fire
and Red River. Those taking over the
parental duties for the Briedens and the
Ron Bohmfalks during their absence
were Calvin and Virginia Schott and
Leo and Beverly Kempf.

Church, Castroville. Sara Lynn's
brother, David, and sister, Christina, par-
ticipated in the ceremony.

Halloween Party for family and friends
at their home near Castroville on Hallo-
ween night The children, and some of
'the adults, came in costume and were
treated to a warm campfire, and a supper
of chili and beans, hot dogs and the

Rio Medina Couple Tours
Big Bend National Park
Bonnie and Buzzy Jaks took a mini
vacation recently to tour Big Bend
National Park. Trying to see everything
in over 700,000 acres in two days kept
them busy from daylight to dark and put
lots of miles on the car, but they had a
really wonderful time seeing the hot
springs, Boquillas and Santa Elena Can-
yon (awesome!), Chisos Mountain
Basin and all the trails and overlooks
they could work into the tight schedule.
One afternoon was spent in the ghost
town of Terlingua looking down old
mine shafts and poking around the old
ruins and cemetery. Upon leaving they
drove out the River Rd (Hwy 170) to
Presidio stopping at Lajitas (ghost
town) and Fort Leaton Slate Historic
Site. This stretch of highway has been
acclaimed as one of the most scenic in
America. They couldn't agree more!
Back on Hwy. 90 heading homeward
they saw several herds pf antelope,
stopped briefly for a whirlwind tour of
the Judge Roy Bean visitor center, and
had a picnic lunch at the Pecos River
overlook. All in all, the only thing
wrong with the trip was that there
wasn't one more day of it as they were
really wanting to take a raft trip down
the Rio Grande through those incredible
canyons. Maybe next time!
Johnny and Florence Hoffmann of
Rio Medina motored to Harper Sunday
to attend the annual wild game auction,
and^according to Florence, the animals
were as beautiful as ever.
Bernice Wurzbach and Margie Haby
were among those taking a bus tour to
Lost Maples on Friday. Included on the
tour was a stop at the Swiss Chalet in
Kerrville where they enjoyed the buffet.
According to Margie, the food was fan-
tastic, and the sweets were unbelievable.
The Johnny Hoffmanns attended the
funeral services for Florence's cousin
Leona Covell of San Antonio on
Tuesday.

The long-awaited rain finally made its
appearance in some areas over the week-
end. Reports varied in different lo-
cations. Some reports were 1.70 inches
near Dunlay, and from 1/2 inch to 2
inches around the Rio Medina area. It
was a welcome sight indeed, after about
five months without any measurable
rain.

Correction
Last week's story about Thomas Page
Sr. stated that his winning percentage of
.51 is fourth best among former
coaches. The figure should have read
.512. We regret the error.
