Hondo Volunteer Fire Department
By Paul Guinn
POLICE OFFICERS-. Rick Taylor and Mike Hall, with the
help of "Slim Box" (so named by the children) and McGruff,
reminded the school children of safety practices.
COMMUNITY HELPERS DAY... at First Baptist Church
School, Oct. 30, brought together representatives of mili-
tary personnel, medical workers, sports, law enforcement,
and food handlers. Shown are Hillary Weaver (US Air
Force), "GI Joe" Cody Sellers, "Dr." James Barlow, "Judge"
Karina Salinas, and "Nurse" Mandy Gilliam from the Kinder-
garten class.
The Hondo Volunteer Fire De-
partment [HVFD] held their month-
ly business meeting November 5,
1987, at the Hondo Fire House; 31
members were in attendance. There
were two donations reported for the
month of October. There was one
application for membership to con-
sider at this month's business meet-
ing. Francisco Garcia was voted
into the department
The building committee spokes-
man reported that the site for Hon-
do Fire Station # 2 was surveyed by
Charles Rothe on November 4,
1987. The brush and concrete pil-
ings on the building site should be
bulldozed off very soon. The fire
chief reported that we responded to
ten fire alarms during the month of
October. A listing of the October
fire alarms is shown below.
The number of state wide fires
per month used in the Number of
1987 Hondo Fire Alarms vs State
Wide Fires graph was gathered from
State Board of Insurance, Texas
Fire Incident Reporting System
(TEXFIRS) Annual Report 1985.
The state wide fires were normal-
ized to the 6 jear average of Hondo
Fire Alarms that was published in
this column on August 13, 1987.
This year, as you can see, the
wet summer weather kept us below
the state trend until the dryness of
August arrived and the natural cover
[brush & or grass] fires increased.
September was more like the state
trend and the return of dryness in
October contributed to another in-
crease in grass fires in the county.
The number of fires can be fur-
ther reduced by everyone practicing
fire safety at home in town, on the
farm or ranch and at work & play.
