MV advances to playoffs
P anthers K.O. Ro-Hawks

Universal City - Awesome!
Unbelievable! Outstanding! All the
superlatives fit the occasion.
Thanks to the superb effort of
their defense, the Medina Valley
Panthers are back in the playoffs for
the sixth time in seven years by
shutting out the Randolph Ro-
Hawks, 7-0.
The defense did it all. Every time
the Ro-Hawks hit the Panthers line,
they hit a brick wall. Other than a
29-yard run on the game's second
play, the Ro-Hawks had no run
longer than seven yards.
All that great defense would have
meant nothing, however, had it not
been for one of the greatest goalline
stands ever, at any level of football.
Randolph had six shots at a touch-
down inside the 6-yard line. Four of
the six came after Randolph had a
lst-and-goal at the 2.
Offensively, the Panthers had
trouble. Five possession were
stalled by mistakes. But much can
be attributed to David Neuman's
absence. Neuman was injured and
didn't suit up, but Joe Rooks and
Steve Alvarado filled in nicely at
fullback, gaining 130 total yards.
In the fourth quarter, a 10-yard
TD pass from quarterback Dwayne
Keller to Jason Holzhaus accounted

for the only score in the ball game.
For their efforts, the Panthers are
District 27-AAA co-champs, tied
with Somerset for first, but because
of their loss to the Bulldogs, MV
will represent the league as runner-
up in the playoffs.
Their first opponent will be a
familiar one, as the Panthers will
play Pearsall at 8 p.m. Friday night
at East Central Stadium.
Medina Valley lost a 21-0 non-
district game to Pearsall earlier in
the year, but the Panthers should be
ready to atone for that setback, in
what promises to be another defen-
sive struggle.
The way Friday's game started, it
looked as though Randolph might
be difficult to stop. Starting at their
own 29-yard line, they moved to
the Panther 18 in six plays.
Tailback Tony Castiglione had a
big run of 29 yards, and an MV
penalty added ten more.
But the Panther defense buckled
down, and Randolph's fourth down
pass from the 20 fell incomplete.
The Ro-Hawks would gain only 25
more yards the rest of the game.
On MV's second possession,
they began at their 49. Alvarado
broke loose for 11 yards, and on the
next play, Keller launched a perfect
pass to the endzone, where Lonnie
Martinez was ready to catch it in
stride for the score. But Castiglione
came out of nowhere to make a
flying leap and knock it down.
Following a holding call, the
Panthers had to punt, and Martinez
booted it to the 5.
Forcing a punt in three plays, the
Panthers had another golden oppor-
tunity, at the Ro-Hawk 41. Carries
by Rooks and Desi Gonzales got
them to the 23, but Randolph
sacked Keller for a loss of 10 more.
Again, MV stopped the Ro-
Hawks dead in their tracks, and they
punted in three downs.
On their final drive of the half,
the Panthers advanced from their
own 25 to the Randolph 34, where
he launched a last-second prayer to
Martinez in the endzone. Although
the Panther receiver outjumped the
two Ro-Hawk defenders, one of
them knocked the ball out of his
hands, as the half ended.
Randolph's defense came out with
penalized, giving the Ro-Hawks a
lst-and-5.
It looked even bleaker, when
QB Shawn McWhorter kept for two
yards and a first down at the 1.
Nobody could stop the Ro-Hawks
in that situation, noj even the great
Panther defense. But stop it they
did. Randolph got as close as the
length of the football, but when it
was all over after four shots, the Ro-
Hawks were at the 3. Nasario
Zepeda, Hector Hurtado, and Gilbert
Ruiz made big tackles at the
goalline.
No one could believe they had
done it. Randolph Coach Bob
Mickler just shook his head in
disbelief. MV Coach Jay Patterson
looked as though he was jumping
on a trampoline.
The momentum had swung, but a
fire still needed to be lit under the
Panther offense.
While the Panthers couldn't get
out of that hole, the defense again
did the job, by stopping Randolph
for losses of seven yards. Andrew
San Miguel, Shane Rutledge, and
Ricky Espino saw to that.
The teams traded punts before
Martinez came up with an intercep-
tion at the Panther 37.
Still, the Panther offense couldn't
penetrate the Ro-Hawk defense.
Randolph, in turn, could not get
a first down, thanks to Espino and
sophomore Jack Donaldson. The
defense pressured the punter into a
bad kick and MV found itself in
great shape at the Randolph 45.
On second down, the Panthers
got the spark they needed when
Rooks bolted off tackle for 23
yards. With the ice finally broken,
it took the Panthers four more
plays to reach the endzone on the
scoring pass with 7:04 left in the
game.
But it still wasn’t over. With
4:00 left MV got the ball back, but
Rooks fumbled at the Panther 40.
The Panther defense had to do it
again. After three plays netted eight
yards, Jamey Alaniz and Anthony
Cerda stopped the quarterback short
of the first down marker.
Randolph had one last chance
from its 15, with 45 seconds left,
but Mark Hodges broke through and
drilled the Ro-Hawk quarterback for
a 10-yard loss to end the game.

The Panthers were in big trouble.
Things got even worse. On the
first play, the Panthers were
Football Contest
reaches final week
Benito Pifia of Hondo did it
again, coining out first in the Anvil
Herald Football Contest for the
third time this year.
His record of 12-3-1 last week
was good enough for the $10 first
prize.
In second place, at 11-4-1, was
Ken Zamzow of Natalia, also no
stranger to prognostication. He
edged Janie Navarro of Hondo, also
114-1, by being "closer" on the
fust tie-breaker.
His pick of Houston 24, Texas
21, was closer to the Coogs actual
winning margin of 738-718 (or
whatever the score of that ridiculous
excuse of a game was) than the
Texas 24, Houston 17 mark
submitted by Ms. Navarro.
This is the last week of the
contest, so anyone wishing to win
the $10, $7.50, or $5 prizes, or the
$50 prize for a perfect score, needs
to enter now. -~v
