The Misery
of Mediocrity
I thought Al Carter's sport’s editorial in the
Sunday, July 2, Corpus Chnsti Caller was most in-
teresting Entitled ‘‘Life in the Middle Lane,” it dealt
with the frustrations of the Houston Astros. Since
1969 they have had a balanced record of 680 wins
and 679 losses. Expectations and promises have of
ten been high; efforts and results are always
mediocre. ISN’T THIS THE SAD COMMENTARY
ON TOO MANY OF OUR PERSONAL LIVES?
There is something uniquely miserable about
constantly being mediocre. It has been described as
THE BEST OF THE WORST AND THE WORST OF
THE BEST. Carter observes that the Astros are
neither winners nor losers. How frustrating!
Now, when our maximum efforts produce only
mediocre results, we really shouldn't be upset But,
what normally frustrates us is that our mediocre
results stem from mediocre efforts. THIS IS
PROBABLY NO WHERE MORE TRUE THAN IN
THE LIVING OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE.
Too many of us have found a comfortable
holding place in the middle lane of Christian livmg
At times the fact that we re so average is soothing;
usually it is down right disturbing.
It's rather sickening to Christ as well. Isn't this
what He had reference to in Revelation 3:15-16?
It's worth reading.
PRAYER: Lord, grant that the dissatisfaction
with our mediocrity will lead us to firm, lasting
commitments toward maximum living
