Balfour Hall of Honor during
ceremonies at the annual Texas
High School Coaches Association
meeting last week in I louston
The recognition by his peers was
perhaps the must fitting final
chapter in the brilliant 31-year
career of Akins, who was described
by THSCA president Bob McQueen
as, “a living legend. '
Akins announced h s retirement as

athletic director last spring, after 23

nent fixture in the Texas high school
football playoffs and s synonym for
gridiron tradition
Akins led the Cats to 17 playoff ap-
pearances in the pa it 19 years, II of

process, the Cats act a state record
for 12 consecutive d strict champion-
ship* from 1969io 1140.
During the 19F season, Akins
reached two pc sonal coaching
milestones, over 30) career victories
and over 200 victories at Gregory-
Portland.
He finished his career as the se-
cond wtnmngest coach in the history
of Texas high schorl football, with a
lifetime record of 302-94-15 At
Gregory-Portland, he compiled a
206-51-7 record
Prior to coming to Gregory-
Portland in 1965, Akins was head
coach at Lometa. Goldthwaite, Tom-
ball. Tidehever aid freer He won
district champion ships four of the
five years he coached at Freer and
coached his first district champion

advanced to the state Finals in 1971,
were uemlfinalists twice, quarter-

the regional playoffs two other

His teams won 10 or more games
13 times and pasted 19 consecutive
seasons of eight or more wins His
only being season was in 1965
In addition, the Wildcats lost only
four non-district games and no
district contests at home in the past
19 years.
His teams were known for their of-
fensive proficiency and registered
over 500 points in s season on five
different occasions They were
shutout only 13 tuner n 263 games
In addition to Akins induction into
the THSCA Balfour Hall of Honor, he
was inducted into the Southwest
Texas State Univumty Hal) of
Honor in 1965 and was one of the
origins 1 inductees into the Texas
Coastal Bend Coaches Association
Hall of Fame in 1967
He was named Coach of the Year
by tlie Corpus Christ) Caller-Times
in 1976 and 1966. ami was honored as
Coach of the Decaite by the South
Texas Chapter of B g Brothers and
Big Sisters of America in I960 He
was also named Football Coach of
the Year !n 1964 by the Big Brothers
and Big Sisters chapter

Thirty two boys from Portland
participated in the GPSA's annual
soccer camp last week
The camp is sponsored try the
North American Soccer Camps and
ran from Monday - Friday from 5 -1
p.m.

and like Last year all the kids involv-
ed had a great time Kiefer said she
likes this program over others they
have had tn the past because, these
coaches sre trained specifically to
coach younger kids
The boys participated in drills
the soccer camp program He began
playing soccer at the age of eight,
played through high school and was
on the Exeter University soccer
team
Nick Alsop coached the under ten
boys. He is 23 years old and from
Walsall. England This la his third
year to coach in the soccer camps
and his second time to be in Texas
Nick coaches and plays on a semi-
soccer team in England

played on two pro soccer teams
Now his team is two divisions below

sophomore at Alaager Sports Col-
lege He is studing a variety of
sports, sports coaching and
business. He would like to be a full
time soccer coach or a manager of a
soccer team.

The 1966 Fall soccer registration
will be held at the Chamber of Com-
merce or Saturday August 6th. 13th
and 20th from 11 a m. -5 p.m and on
Thursday, August1th and 18th from
6s m.-Cp.m
The registration fee has been set
at 621 for the first child, 616 for the
second and 615 for the third or more
The fee had to be increased due to
the insurance fee increasing.

This was Martins first year with
playing soccer «t an early age and
kept playing all thrnugh high school
He is also a sprinter at the Alsager
College as well as a soccer player
All three like to play golf and tennis
for relaxation.
Jon is from Wrexham, Wales This
is his first summer in the U S. as
well as his first summer to coach
with the soccer camp.
This week the coaches sre in Alice
and Kingsville They will be back
August 13th to play in the Just Say
No" soccer exhibi
