Foster, have lived here for 134
years He has been employed
by Southwestern Refining for
36 years and is purchasing
agent
The Kemps have three sons,
Joe and Tommy, who are both
married and live here, and
Harry, married and living in
Corpus Christi They have
added five grandchildren
Betty's hobbies are. first
golf, then gardening She also
enjoys all kinds of handwork,
such as embroidery, knitting,
• needlepoint and crocheting
She has worked for eight years
as a volunteer at Memorial
• Medical Center
Now here are Betty's super
recipes
EASY 1IOU.ANDAISE
SAUCE
. In top of double boiler
Cream, 4 cup butter
Beat in 3 egg yolks
Add gradually and mix well
14 tbs lemon juice
4 tsp salt
4 tsp paprika
Stir in 5 tablespoons boiling
water
Place the sauce over the
bottom of double boiler in
which one inch of water is
simmering Stir well for 5
minutes until sauce thickens
Remove from heat and beat for
I minute
CURRIED VEGETABLES
Cook in lightly salted water
40 ounces mixed frozen
vegetables
Drain
Heat over low heat
4 cup mayonnaise
1 4 tsp each, curry powder,
salt, garlic salt, cayenne
Pour sauce over vegetables,
.toss lightly Just before serving
add 4 cup whipping cream or
evaporated milk Serves 810
CREAMED EGGS
AND ASPARAGUS
5 hard cooked eggs, sliced
thin
• I large can of asparagus
1 can mushroom soup and
asparagus liquid to make 2
cups
Cut up asparagus, fold into
soup and liquid mixture Place
layer of egg slices then layer of
asparagus in casserole Top
with bread crumbs, dot with
butter Bake at 350 degrees
until bubbly Serves 4-6

ORANGECAKE
Grate the rind of 1 orange
into 14 cups sugar Cream this
until fluffy with 4 cup butter
Heat :l eggs in one at a time
Sift then measure 3 cups
cake flour, resift with 4 tap
salt and 34 tsp baking
powder
Measure 4 cup orange
juice. 4 cup water, 2 tbs
lemon juice
Add sifted ingredients in
three parts to butter mixture
alternately with liquid Beat
until smooth after each ad-
dition
Bake in 3 9-inch layers at 375
degrees for 20-30 minutes or
until cake begins to shrink
from sides of pan
Tip All-purpose flour may
be used in place of cake flour
After measuring flour remove
2 tablespoons for each cup
ICING FOR
ORANGE CAKE
Melt one stick margarine < >4
lb ), stir in 1 box powdered
sugar, add 1 tbs lemon juice
and beat well adding enough
orange juice to bring frosting
to spreading consistency
Grated orange rind is a nice
addition

COMPANY BEANS
2 Tbs cooking oil
4 lb ground beef
4 cup onions iminced)
1 can pork and beans (16 oz
size)
1 can Ranch Style beans (16
oz size)
1 tsp prepared mustard
2 tbs barbecue sauce
4 cup catsup
4 cup brown sugar (not
packed)
4 tsp pepper, dash of salt
Heal cooking oil in large
skillet, add meat and onions
Cook until meat is brown
Drain oil from meat, add meat
to the other ingredients in a
greased 2-quart casserole
Baking in 350 degree oven for
30 to 35 minutes A dish that
can be fixed ahead and put in
freezer Just be sure its
completely thawed before
putting in oven so that the
beans don't get mushy

VII Spring convention in Hondo
Thursday, March 24, and
Friday. March 25,
Mrs Stiverson and Mrs
Vinson attended a dinner
Thursday evening and business
meetings, a luncheon and a
flower arranging program
Friday
Portland Garden Club won
seven awards Mrs Vinson,
awards chairman of the local
club, accepted the awards on
behalf of the club Site will
report on each award at the
next regular meeting
Mrs Stiverson was installed
as treasurer of District VII of
Texas Garden Clubs. Inc This
is an honor for both Mrs
Stiverson and Portland Garden

'Die Girl Scouts of Junior
Troop 430 enjoyed a fun-filled
day in Beeville last Saturday,
even though the weatherman
didn't cooperate and there was
an abundance of "liquid
sunshine ",
The occasion was the Junior
World Neighbor Day, and
approximately 2H0 girls and 50
adults joined together to teach
and learn the requirements
needed to earn the World
Neighbor badge Each troop
attending was responsible for
teaching at least one
requirement to the rest of (he
girls
Among things that the girls
learned were Several games
and songs from different
countries around the world;
about the World Association of
Girl Guides and Girl Scouts,
about several world
organizations that help
children in other countries,
how to say several simple
phrases in two languages other
than English and how to
communicate with someone
from another country who
doesn't speak English
At the end of the day, the
girls had completed all the
requirements for the badge
with one exception
participating in a service
project for children in a foreign
country this will lie com
pleted in the next couple of
weeks
In addition to working on the
badge requirements, each
troop has chosen one specific
country to study about Troop
430 chose Germany and for the
past 2 1-2 months, the girls
have been studying the
customs. culture. food,
language, etc of Germany On
Saturday, the troop had on
display, items made in Ger
many, pictures, coins, posters
and. most popular of all, a
large supply of homemade
pretzels, which the girls had
made for all the other scouts to
taste
At the end of the very wet
day, it was agreed by all. that it
had been a huge success and
everyone is ready to do it
again
