A minor fish kill not directly
related to cold weather has
been taking place in Aransas
Bay
Biologists of the Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department
(TPSWD) say that since Jan
21 less than 100 fish have been
killed, primarily in the Key
Allegro Harbor Oaks - Little
Bay area
Dr. Don Lewis of Texas A &
M University has been working
with the biologists to determine
the cause of the kill Lewis'
preliminary diagnosis in
dicates that the deaths are due
to the invasion of a fungus of
the Ichthyothonus gensus The
species has not yet been
determined
, This fungus is very common
in menhaden, gizzard shad and
other similar fish on the

The greatest threat to American wildlife today is not
hunting, as many organized groups and individual non
hunters would have you believe The greatest threat, by far,
is the destruction of wildlife habitat
It is estimated that one million acres a year are being
destroyed in America. One million acres each year that will
no longer furnish food, water and shelter for wildlife are
being converted into highways, airports, shopping centers
and other permanent "improvements " Strip mining, new
reservoirs and dredging also lake their toll in destroyed
habitat
Instead of fighting one another the hunters and non-
hunters should join togethei to protect our forests, wild
rivers, wetlands and wilderness areas from destruction
Wildlife needs all the friends it can get and the combined
efforts of hunters, birders, fishermen and photographers are
needed Their best efforts will be needed if the goal tliey seek
is to be reached And their goal is the same in every case
the preservation of wildlife for future generations
In spite of what some people would have you believe,
sport hunting has not resulted in the extermination of any
wildlife species In fact, since the start of modern wildlife
management in the 1930s many wildlife species have in-
creased dramatically, in spite of continuous hunting
The number of white-tailed deer has increased from
350.000 in 1890 to more than 15 million today This is more
deer than the Indians had to hunt before the white man en-
tered on the Amencan scene There are 10 times more turkey
and seven times more pronghorn antelope than we had at the
turn of the century. Since the early 1900s the elk herd has
increased from 41.000 animals to about a million
Hunting under carefully supervised conditions and based
on scientific research, does not injure wildlife Since this is
true, why shouldn't the decision to hunt or not to hunt be left
up to the individual7
The wildlife of America belongs to the people hunter
and non-hunter alike and, instead of fighting one another, we
should all devote our energies, our enthusiasm, and our
money to preserving wildlife habitat and seeing that wildlife
is managed by scientists who have devoted Iheir life's work
to this undertaking Everyone, especially wildlife, would
profit
Atlantic coast It is not com
mon in the black drum which is
the primary victim in the
present outbreak
Indications are that long
jieriods of fresh water, low
temperatures and high in-
cidence of coliform bacteria in
tlie channels have produced
stress conditions in the fish
that allowed the invasion of the
fungus
The fungus seems to be
present in most of Aransas Bay
but has not yet reached a
dangerous level Biologists of
the TPAWD continue to
monitor the bay for this
problem
