SOIL CONSERVATION NEWS
Soils Evaluation
Thirty six boys participated
in the Soils Evaluation Contest
on December the sponsored by
the Kendall County Soil and
Water Conservation District for
4H and FFA boys. The boys
seemed to do good evaluating
the different soils. They also
selected conservation practices
needed to keep this land in per-
manent agriculture. The high
scoring individuals will be an-
nounced in the near future.
Rests Pasture
George Ludolf, south of Ken-
dalia, has one of his pastures
resting now. The grasses in this
pasture have made a good
growth and seed crop.
Ludolf realizes that for grass-
es to produce to their fullest ca-
pacity, they must have periods
of rest from grazing. This prac-
tice has been used by Ludolf for
years and has been a great help
to his rangeland.
Essays For The Schools
The Board of Supervisors of
the Conservation District will
take a special program and pic-
ture to each high school in early
January in preparation to the
Essay Writing Contest. This
year the title will be “Conserva-
tion The Key to Plenty.” The
District will recognize the writ-
ers of the best essays in each
school. Then all essays will be
entered in the Ft. Worth Press
Awards Program.
Soil Improving Crop
Jim Hausman located east of
Bergheim has a field of Austri-
an Winter Peas that are making
a good growth. These peas were
planted in a field that had had
Hybrid Sudan shredded and
worked with a chisel type plow.
Commercial fertilizers were ap-
plied and the seed inoculated at
the time of planting.
Nitrogen fixing nodules are
being produced on the.roots of
the plants. By this process nitro-
gen is being added to the soil
where it will be available for the
use of future crops as well as for
present use of the Winter peas.
Food Is A Bargain
The average food store today
carries between 6000 and 8000
different food items. Americans
spend only about 18.5% of their
take-home pay on food today and
buy 15% more farm food with
an hours work than thev did in
1929.
