VA’S ADMINISTRATION
QUESTION AND ANSWERS
Q—Is there a special protection
for a veteran who has been
receiving 100 per cent dis-
ability from the VA for
almost twenty years ? I
thought that a law was
passed on this matter.
A—The law to which you refer
states that after a veteran
has had a service-connected
disability for twenty years,
his disability rating cannot
be reduced below the lowest
rating that he has held dur-
ing that twenty year period.
Q—I have read in your column
that a veteran can collect a
pension from the VA for the
time he served in the serv-
ice if he retires or becomes
unable to work. Is this cor-
x*©ct ^
A—Veterans of WW I, WWII or
the Korean Conflict who
were discharged under other
than dishonorable condi-
tions after 90 or more days
service, or because of a
service-connected disability,
who are permanently and
totally disabled from rea-
sons not traceable to service
may be entitled to a non-
service-connected pension if
their income from all
sources does not exceed
$1800, if single, or $3000
with dependents.
Q—I have heard of a bill in
Congress that will enable all
ex-GI’s to obtain a GI loan
for a home, etc. My husband
was in the service from
1958 to 1961. Would he be
eligible for this benefit
from the VA and what limi-
tations are made by this
this bill?
A—The bill to which you refer
has been passed and is now
law. If a veteran has had
90 days of consecutive ac-
tive duty and an honorable
discharge, he may qualify
for a loan for a home. This
loan is administered by the
Federal Housing Adminis-
tration; the veteran must
obtain a certificate of veter-
an’s status from the VA. If
a veteran has already had a
GI loan, he does not qualify
under this new loan pro-
gram.
A Naval air squadron was op-
erating from a carrier in the Pa-
cific on a peacetime exercise un-
der the strictest orders that ra-
dio silence was to be maintained
on all flights. Suddenly the offi-
cers in the operations room
heard the voice of one pilot on
the radio snort: “Brother, am I
fouled up.”
The senior operations officer
grabbed a microphone and an-
grily demanded: “Will the pilot
who just broke radio silence
identify himself immediately ?”
A few seconds of deathly si-
lence followed, and then a voice
came floating back: “I’m not
that fouled up.”

HISTORICAL BOOK
ABOUT THIS VICINITY
The Boerne and New Braun-
fels area is featured in a now-
complete, three-volume, soft-
cover collection of Texas’ major
stories, “Off The Beaten Trail,”
just completed with release of
Volume 3, by Hill Country au-
thor-historian-news columnist,
Ed Syers.
Now in seventh printing, pop-
ularly-known OBT has appeared
for several years as a weekly
metropolitan feature in most ma-
jor Texas cities. Now topping
the 50,000 mark, its coverage is,
as one reviewer puts it, “border
to border and prehistory to yes-
terday.”
Texas historian Syers claims
it primarily dedicated to our
\aller cities and towns, “where
too few Texans know how much
history was made and what
needs be seen.”
Syers finds a wayside Hill
Country hamlet, almost forgot-
ten. Sisterdale, once a heart of
possibly this State’s most re-
markable community of intellec-
tuals, was also dead center in
Comanche land, yet strangely at
peace with its neighbors.
Syers simply says more big
city people “need to get off the
concrete jet stream and learn.”
His closeout dedication is to the
“Old-Timers who made Texas.”
The three-volume series is
available by ordering direct,
$1.50 per volume or $4.25 per
full set of three throug “Off The
Beaten Trail Press,” Box F, In-
gram, Texas 78025.
The remaining supply is limit-
ed: on sell-out, will not be re-
printed for a year.
Appearances are deceiving.
Whenever you see a big house
without any plumbing there is
usually something behind it.
