The skip is really rolling and
will probably be around for
awhile
"Shooting Skip" of course is
illegal ‘talkmg in excess of 150
miles) but this doesn't seem to
stop a lot of people
Too many CB'ers believe
because they can talk to
Klorida. Alabama. Kentucky
or where ever, that they have a
powerful set or that a linear is
necessary
You can shoot skip with 2, 3
or 4 watts power if the con-
ditions are right No need for
power linear amplifier, with
causes bleed-over that messes
up all channels
One of these days the "Big"
boys will realize that they are
not popular with “Uncle
Charlie''
Usually, someone buys a
little 50-watt box and talks a
little further than his "Buddy',
then his buddy buys a loo
waiter Not to be out done, the
first "Big Boy" buys 300. then
the buddy S0Q. then 1000 pretty
soon each is out talking KIOU
Radio station None of his
fellow channel mates can
understand their modulation
and every person on all other
channels can't enjoy con-

versations because of the bleed
over
If everyone stays with the
power their class D license
authorizes each and everyone
will have a chance to talk
To those "Big Boys ' If you
want to run power and talk long
distance, get a HAM license
Bookshelf I
By Mrs. W. C. Sparks 1
For a long time-ever since I
have talked to people who knew
the late ,1 Paul Getty per
tonally and told me of some of
his special traits of per
sonality I have been in
terested in this unique man one
of the richest in the world
His autobiography. "As I See
It", was written w hen he was in
his 80 s and was being printed
at the time of he death
Although he was 83 years of
age i he refers to it in the book i
his writing is clear and his
thinking alert
As are we all. he is a person
of great contradictions He was
a conservative, a friend of
Richard Nixon's on the one
hand, yet he abhorred hunting
and the killing of animals and
from the very beginning was
finqly-even violently opposed
to the Vietnam War The book,
as he tells it, reveals a great
deal about the man
He held his parents in high
regard and deep affection Ills
father a lawyer, came from
Chicago, was in on the first
Oklahoma oil development and
soon became a millionaire
Getty himself would like to
have become either a writer or
a diplomat: because he was an
only son. however, he felt a
great obligation to continue
and build on the oil business his
father had started His father
started him as a "roughneck"
and as Getty worked out. he
learned the mechanical steps
of bringing in a well On his
father’s death, he was
grounded in the fundamentals
and took over
Incidentally, he finished his
formal education at Oxford and
so acquired a life-time affinity
for England and the English
He was even friends with
"David" then Prince of Wales
He claims David was much-
maligned and misunderstood
i He says the same about
Richard Nixon )
Getty's oil expansions look
him all over the world and he
had many friends and
acquaintances in the VIP
echelons His Middle East
operations were a great suc-
cess and kept him there a great
deal Eventually he bought
Sutton House tn England for it
was moat centrally located for
his work Sulton Place
belonged not to him but to the
Getty Oil Company
His outstanding hobby
became art collecting As time
went on he erected a fabulous
art museum in Southern
California where he housed his
world renowned paintings and
sculplure-works of the
masters He gave it lo the state
that people may come there
free of charge and for its
maintenance he set up a
foundation
He has an interesting method
of felling his story He deals
with his five marriages in one
narrative-of two chapters In
several instances he does this
lakes one aspect of his life and
deals with it; he doesn't always
tell his story chronologically
tine chapter discusses the
many myths that have grown
up around him This is both
interesting and amusing -
especially the discussion of his
stinginess He is not stingy, he
says he merely wants to spend
his money for the things he
considers important Why
shouldn’t he drive an old car
i one a I960 model i as long as if
run* well and why should he
spend the money for a new car
when he could further endow
his museum which he con-
siders his outstanding gift to
the public
I found it an interesting study
in psychology and the
philosophy of one of the
modem world's lies! known

This week we have a change of schedule for you Because
of the generous donation from various people of Portland and
Gregory and because of the profits that were earned from
our popcorn sales and our concession stand, we are no longer
going to hold the Mexican Supper
Through the efforts of the band members and the
townspeople, we have reached our goal for the funds to send
us to the Six Flags Music Festival
Thanks to all of you
A special thanks goes to a contractor in the city who most
graciously donated a large sum of money to the cause
Once again, thanks to all! Bye!
