Australian Background Shown
In Morgan's Family Tale
My Place" is one of the most dif
ferent books ! have read lately It is
written by Sally Morgan about her
aboriginal 'Australian) family and
her own life). From thfis book you
will learn much about the mores, the
backgruu'id of Australian people
many things most oi us never realiz-
ed.
This was an Australian best-seller
a powerful autobiography of three
generations of aborigine- by one of
their own Sally Morgan lias written
a beautifully crafted bock at onre
a work off great humor poignancy,
dignity, and courage One reviewer
has compared it to Routs" for its
scope and romantic visi n It is also
classed a.< reminiscent of the saga of
"Gone Wi th the Wind"
Basically we can recognize the
similarity of Australian attitudes
about race and prejudic so muc h
that has disturbed American at-
titudes iespecially the South* I
never realized before that
Australian aborigines were dark and
hence victims, mistreated and
misunderstood, victims of
unreasonable prejudice
In the beginning Sally Morgan
traces the experiences of her own
life, growing up in suburban Perth in
the fifties and sixties ‘of this cen-
tury). As she examines her
memories and images of her
childhood, vague hints begin to
emerge, hidden knowledge is un-
covered. at age fifteen, the author
learns that she is an abongine-the
equivalent of discovering one's
black origins after growing up
white" After her initial shock, Sal-
ly is determined to go in quest of lier
roots This involves what one might
call detective work There is "he
mystery of identity Stories from The
past unfold, the indentity of various
characters come to life There are
clues and solutions to the puzzle
In 1992 the author travek4 bM i ll

moving but rewarding (with its
various revelations* journey. What
had started as a tentative search for
information about her origins says
one commentator, became an over-
whelming emotional and spiritual

the sort of Australian history which
asn't been written before
