When Jesus was on earth he
was met by a great deal of dis-
trust on the part of many peo-
ple, particularly the spiritual
leaders and the more educated in
general. Because he demanded
total commitment to himself,
they felt he was crowding in on
their rights, their lives, and
their freedoms. And in a certain
sense they were right. What
they did not realize is that Jesus
did not want to take from them
anything that was good, only
that which interfered with their
relationship to God. In its place
he would give that which was
wholesome, God-pleasing, and
which led to eternal fellowship
with God, for time and for eter-
nity. The Christian church is in
a similar situation. It s distrust-
ed, by-passed, crticised, and in
some instances persecuted. Yet
the Church is not there to hurt,
but to help people. Its aim is to
free man from slavery to self
and sin, and bring him into the
glorious freedom of fellowship
with God. We urge you to accept
the Church for what it is. Then
some, receive, and rejoice.

UNITED CHURCH WOMEN
WILL OBSERVE MAY DAY
The Sunrise Hill Council of
United Church Women will ob-
serve its annual May Fellowship
Day of Friday, May 1, at St.
John’s Lutheran Church in
Boerne.
A coffee hour at 9:30 will pre
cede the service in the sanctuary
at 10:00 o’clock.
The first May Fellowship Day
in 1932 was the response of
church women to the crisis of (
the great depression. “Let us ’'
come together to show the faith
that is in us.”
In the years between that day
and 1964, this special day in the
program year of United Church
Women has had deep signifi-
cance to church women, meeting
together interdenominationally,
in hundreds of communities, to
face urgent domestic issues.
The theme chosen for this
year’s observance “One Family ,
Under God, Freed of Residence f*
and Job Opportunity“ is the last
in a three year series upon As-
signment: Race. In a year of
crisis in the struggle for racial
justice, as in that first May
Fellowship Day, the response of
church women in study and in
action will answer the call “Let
us come together to show the
faith that is in us.”
