postponed in order that council
members and city officials
could attend a meeting of the
Texas Municipal league at San

said Wednesday that he had
taken no action aboul paying
the constable's mileage ex

wrecked automobiles, hut has
a variety of fire-fighting uses
The tool cost *4,750 and over
$1,000 already has been

Hearing Screening
Set For November
Kindergarten and first grade students of the Gregory
Portland district will he screened for possible hearing
deferts in tests planned for Fridays during November
The tests are carried out by speech therapists and school
nurses of the district Any suspected hearing loss will be
reported to parents of the child so that they may seek further
medical evaluation
This screening is done routinely each year in order to
detect hearing loss as soon as possible Vision and hearing
reports are recorded on the child’s health card
Homecoming Queen Nominees

Homecoming Queen at the Football game Oct, 28 against
Sinton The nominees are named by the senior class and
voted on by the student body with the queen being announced
in special homecoming exercises scheduled |ust before the
football game The girls are from left Lisa Carswell, Tammy
Shaw, Sherry Bllsing, Gay Morris and Barbara Schriefer.

increased in several areas of

District Operates Bus
For Handicapped
A special bus for children
who cannot ride regular
school buses because of
handicaps has been in
operation by the Gregory-
Portland School District for
the past two weeks
"We have been assisting
parents financially in the
transportation of ban
dicapped children to school
lor several years but this
year the district is operating
a special bus for these
children." superintendent
W C Andrews said
There are currently 17
children in the district who
are eligible for the special
transportation They are
being given instruction in
self-contained education
units There are two sessions
of the early childhood unit
that lakes handicapped
children from three to five
years of age One session is
in the morning and the other
in the afternoon The other
unit is a combination unit for
children physically han
dicapped. or with other
conditions making the self-
contained unit the most
appropriate placement
Transportation funds for
special education children
became available in Texas
several years ago when the
stale curriculum was
enlarged to include a
program known as Plan A,
which sought to bring
education to all students in
relation to their need l-nst
year, this amounted to $278
per student per year and was
paid directly to the parents
on the basis of the number of
days the child attended
school
At Ihe present, a small
mini-school bus is being used
to transport the children,
however, a special bus
designed for this purpose has
tieen ordered by the district
and will be pul into use w hen
it arrives In addition to the
driver of the bus. a special
aide also rides to assist in
caring for Ihe children
The district seeks Ihe
assistance ol Ihe parents, or
guardians, to he on hand
when Ihe lius arrives to pick
