Portland Garden Club has
given two ”Yard of the
Season" awards for Fall
Sharing tne award are Mr
and Mrs Leroy Havelka. who
have lived at 121 Catalina 2',
years and Mr and Mrs
Charles K Smith, who have
lived at 206 San Saba since
June
In the Havelka s front yard
are Chinese tallow, non-bearing
mulberry, raintree and
Brazilian pepper trees Bed
petunias are planted around
each tree The mailbox is
surrounded by a rock bed with
calendulas in the center Sego
palms are planted on each side
of the driveway.
A front courtyard features
plantings of green and
vartgated airplane plant, aloe
vera, leather leaf lern,
petunias. Moses in a boat, and
elephant ears Monkey grass
borders the planting area
Wood and rocks are intermixed
in the planting bed
A rock bed next to the front
porch displays a Mexican
burro with sprengeri Potted
plants within the courtyard and
on the front porch are Red
kolanchoe, sprengeri. star of
Bethlehem, airplane plant and
large ficus Benji. A hanging

Barney Hill Dies

Mrs. Chester (Barney) Hill,
65. 705 Bay view, died at 8 15
a m Saturday. Nov 4. in a
Corpus Christi hospital
She was a native of Mineral
Wells and was reared and
educated in Electra He had
lived in Fort Worth liefore
moving to Corpus Christi in
1947 and had worked as an oil
secretary there before moving
here 12 years ago
She was a member of First
United Methodist Church and a
member of bridge clubs here1
and in Corpus Christi before
her illness
She is survived by her
husband, Chester C Hill; two
daughters. Ms Nancy
Chapman and Mrs Helen
Williams; three grandchildren,
all of Portland, two sisters.
Mrs Inez Williams of Dallas,
and Mrs Gladys Wilson of
Ferris. Calif , fwo brothers.
James M Gonce of Ferris, and
J R Gonce of San Patricio
Funeral services were
conducted at the Maxwell P
Dunne Chapel at 11 am
Monday. Nov 6, with the Rev
